No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

For years, I've criticised countries like Russia & Georgia that try to prevent foreign funding of civil society. Now I'm starting to wonder whether we need similar rules: to stop Russian influence operations, certainly, but also to stop the US boosting the far right in Europe. What times we live in!
Not to take away from a really important story, but what is important about it is tells is what the US new national security strategy means in practice:
US government to fund Maga-aligned think-tanks and charities in Europe
State department grants to spread ‘American values’ are part of Washington’s 250th anniversary celebrations

Seltsam: "inoffizielle" Medienaccounts inaktiv seit August 2024, seit gestern (5.

🚨HOLY CRAP. The Trump admin just took a SLEDGEHAMMER to due process, largely eliminating the Board of Immigration Appeals process and MANDATING DISMISSAL of ALL appeals (which cost $1,000 thanks to OBBBA) filed after tomorrow unless a majority of the BIA votes to hear the case.

This was to be expected - after cutting support to pro-democracy civil society last year, the US state is now looking to actively support far-right affiliated think tanks and charities in Europe.

I got my first whistle last weekend and it was a very intense moment, putting it around my neck and thinking about how to use it responsibly to protect my neighborhood. That happened because of the organizing that has already been done in MN, Chicago, and LA.

Sollte STARK die 300 Millionen erhalten, gewinnen erneut antidemokratisch denkende (russische?) Netzwerke Einfluss in Deutschland.

Ein zweites Palantir entsteht, in einer Phase massiver russischer Bedrohung.

Das darf nicht passieren. Wir sollten widerstandsfähiger werden!

Their collective misunderstanding of the sources of American power - and how their largesse is all downstream from it - is authentically stunning.

They believe they did it on their own, that their fortune isn’t a freak effect of the tax code, the courts, the Navy, rivers, & land grant universities.
