The great part about being in between Christmas and new years is that I am *entirely* left to my own devices, which means, YEP, i'm doodling again.

Tonight we're doing pigeons and possums doing people poses.

Practicing some silly poses for the ol' book

And because Sinatra wanted the Count Basie band to play behind him. AND stay in the same hotel instead of being sent across town.

The Randol Bass music for The Night Before Christmas sounds like E.T.!

Yup.
I'm telling y'all, these dudes don't know anything.🤡

Frank Sinatra was a vocal anti-racist. He fought racism with his actions, his words, and his money.

Actions:
Refused to stay at segregated hotels. Made sure Black artists got paid fairly.

Words:
Literally wrote an article in Ebony Magazine

we’ve been over this

we just did this in Massachusetts

they’re not gonna leave, they’ll whine and bitch and moan and eventually this will raise more money than expected because nowhere they go is actually like the place they’re leaving
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

We are now entering the weird liminal space between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Anything could happen during this time. You could feel weirdly nostalgic, you could see a photo of a cat, you could remember to feed your Neopets. The possibilities are endless.

I never imagined body parts being donated for a cosmetic procedure, but I guess that's a reality. I guess I wouldn't care since I'd be dead, but it does deflate the ego a bit. You think you'll end up donating a kidney or a heart when you sign up. Not an ass.

Yeah. The main reason I know who I know is they're either part of my cohort I came up with and met before anyone knew who we were, or I've been around for so long I've met them over and over and we've struck up a friendship.

Can't think of anyone I went to an event to try to ensnare. Doesn't work.

Advice I now give to grad students and postdocs in the sciences: Don’t just try to meet and impress senior scientists. They’ll retire soon. Get to know your fellow students - make friends where possible, be colleagues at least. These are the people you’ll be sharing the field with for decades.

Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

One of my favourite things is having this skill but also having absolutely nothing I’d want to “leverage” those connections for. Instead I have a bunch of neat friends and acquaintances who make cool things. Y’all are cool.

How it is:

I was out walking when a man told me i was ugly. I held back tears and ran home as fast as I could. I spent the rest of the day reflecting on my self-worth.

How it should be:

I was out walking when a man told me I was ugly. I pepper sprayed him before going on to enjoy my day.

I think the potential for lower energy cost is real. But energy costs are only a small portion of datacenter costs, and putting everything in space raises those other costs. So seems unlikely to be practical any time in the near future.

The issue, of course, is that your power costs are going to zero because you are spending a *buttload* of money on infrastructure to make power costs go to zero, and gaining a ton and a half of latency in the process.

It's probably cheaper to build a solar+battery powered datacenter in the sahara.
