It is a very memorable scene, and I always wondered how they filmed it.
Answer: nearly drown a live rat for real
The Abyss (1989)

"A rat used to demonstrate the film’s oxygenated water technology drowned during filming. Faced with the prospect of a dead rat — and losing the production’s “No Animals Were Harmed” certification — [James] Cameron performed CPR on the rodent. The rat sprang..."

How much of this is "the court system is the same size as it was in 1974"
Extremely blackpilling fact is that apparently, as recently as the 1970s, something like 20% of all cases actually went to trial. Today, it's like 1-3%, depending on which state or federal system we're talking about.

“Electric cars are no more dangerous for pedestrians than petrol and diesel models, researchers find.”

They’re also no safer. Which reminds us that “better cars” aren’t the main answer to the consequences of cars. The main answer is fewer (and smaller) cars driven less frequently in better cities.
EVs 'just as safe for pedestrians'
Electric vehicles (EVs) are no more dangerous to pedestrians than traditional petrol or diesel cars, according to a new study.

For @jezebeldotcom.bsky.social, on the event of her birthday, I wrote about why Jane Austen has endured so long and so strongly: www.jezebel.com/happy-birthd...
Happy Birthday to Jane Austen, the Inventor of the Rom-Com
"The rules around female behavior have changed, but the architecture of how people interact and fall in love have not," author Jennifer Egan told Jezebel on why Austen endures.

True story. Sometime in the 80s my parents bought 1/2 cow from a butcher "because it was cheaper that way". It was so much red meat. Too much. Lasted us a whole year. It came with random organs too. My mom served us beef heart on Valentine's Day ♥️

It goes:
- charlie horses
- giving birth
- wearing Birkenstocks
- poison oak rash/shingles
I wore my college roommate's Birkenstocks for one day and it probably the most pain I've been in other than childbirth.

As we mourn Rob Reiner, don’t skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning California’s Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.

Rob Reiner had a hand in writing, producing, directing, knowing a guy, pairing up talents, punching up a script on the down low, doing a cameo for like so much of the funniest shit coming out of Hollywood the last 50 years. His influence is seen everywhere

The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

ICE pepper-sprayed this 1-year-old girl.

Once at the hospital, the doctor had to call in a poison control specialist.

They had never seen anyone that young pepper sprayed.

Another horrific story.

Same with claims "ditching education and careers." Most people who are on OF are doing it for extra money, often to pay for things like tuition or to support themselves while they build careers.

Any movie marathons, really.
Trying to watch a whole trilogy in one night in high school with friends at sleepovers.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.
