People should use their SNAP benefits for whatever they think they need. Both because any effort you make to micromanage purchases is inefficient and cumbersome and because people who need help aren’t obligated to perform for or satisfy others in order to eat.

With the Trump administration cutting off SNAP benefits, I think it's really time to pull together. I made a little donation to City Harvest, and if you donate to any food bank and tell me what your small problem is, I'll give you a pep talk in Monday's newsletter! (Send me your receipt too!)

lotta people saying to donate to food banks which is great, but if that’s not available to you, often they are desperate for volunteers! shifts can be short, a few hours when you’re free, doing stuff like sorting boxes, making sandwiches, or delivering meals, depending on the org

I know we can’t fix this looming SNAP loss ourselves, but I am heartened by the sheer number of people donating what they can to help their neighbors and encouraging others to do the same. So many more people want to help than want to hurt.

Yes, this, & set up a recurring donation if you can.

Cash is ALWAYS better than collecting food through drives. Food banks have deals with suppliers that enable them to stretch a dollar further than what we can buy at retail prices. They can take $5 and get $15+ in value from it to feed folks.
I just donated to my local food bank. If you can, you should too. People are already suffering but next month, in particular, is going to be so difficult.

If you have it please donate cash to the food banks. $10 in their hands will feed more people than the $10 worth of canned goods you can buy for retail prices. Also check on your elders. Many of them will not admit they rely on these programs so grocery gift cards or a surprise bag of staples

"The agency's announcement came after more than 200 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday called on USDA to draw on its emergency reserves to fund November food benefits.

However, according to a memo seen by Reuters, the department indicated that it would not do so."

The SNAP program "maintains a reserve, currently estimated to be about $5 billion, that can help cover emergencies and shortfalls."

The Trump administration is refusing to use those funds.

With millions at risk of losing SNAP in the coming days, a reminder: hunger doesn't happen in isolation. When food assistance disappears, families use rent money to eat. Then come evictions and homelessness.

Housing, food, healthcare—it's all connected. Cut one thread and the whole thing unravels.
