Hi folks, I'm seeing a lot of "Eyes on Minneapolis" & "We support Minnesota" sentiment. Here's a tangible way you can help:

Trump just suspended federal funding for SNAP benefits to Minnesota. Second Harvest Heartland is an MN-based hunger-relief org.

Please donate what you can.

There is more than enough food for everyone. As one of the nation’s largest hunger relief agencies, it’s our job to make sure healthy, nutritious food gets to the households who need it. Every day, we...

People say AI is a magic shortcut to creativity & success. I’ll tell you the real secret and it’s voraciously reading, being interested in everything, being diligent in the pursuit of learning, paying attention to the interior lives of others & keeping a heart open to the world.

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

Tried to make this case to my 7-year-old and it, uh, did not exactly land
IT'S '6-7', COOPER. A GENERATION ALPHA TREND. WHAT THEY CALL A 'MAY-MAY'. IT'S AN ORPHANED SIGNIFIER, NO SIGNS ATTACHED. ONE COULD CALL IT DADAIST, BUT SOMME SAY IT'S TOO STUPID TO BE DADA. IT'S ANTI-MEANING, ANTI-HUMOUR, BUT DAMN IF THOSE KIDS DON'T FIND IT A CRACK-UP.

At some point, the AI tulip fever bubble will pop, and it will be messy, so I strongly advise you all to keep up your skills in reading, writing, comprehension, programming if you do that, thinking for yourself, not being a bigoted jerkass, and having some respect for the creative work of others.

Collaborative excellence: pass it on
If more academics started thinking like this, the world would be so much better off. This is what academia *should* be!

Even though academia has too many hot dog stand merchants, we can still choose to operate as a borderless, free-sharing, collaborative social ecosystem.
my mom taught me there's two kinds of businesses: hot dog stands and art galleries

- hot dog stands protect territory and keep competition off their turf
- art galleries benefit from more adjacent art galleries, cluster together to amplify reach/support

youre an art gallery, not a hot dog stand

This isn't a list of jobs that A.I. can easily replace.

It's a list of jobs that techno fascists don't think are worthwhile or meaningful and that they want to eliminate.

They don't want humans to try to make sense of the world, they want us to believe whatever we're told.
Yo, historians, what the actual ****?

I've seen how LLMs handle "history." This is... not good.

The idea that the papers you write in graduate school are the aim, rather than forming the person who has something worth saying and worth learning from, is among other things a crisis of confidence and imagination. We used to worry about impostor syndrome - this is just impostor manufacture.
If you are applying to a PhD, don't use an LLM in composing your proposal.

If you are doing a PhD, don't use an LLM to do the writing and reading and thinking for you.

Sorry, I am going to die on this hill.

This is why I love bibliography: i want to do a really good job on a small little piece and add it to the wealth of human knowledge. Then 50 years later, someone else finds it and adores this stranger who helped them so thoroughly. I want to be for others who bibliographers were to me.

Today is Jane Austen’s deathiversary. She was just 41, at work on the novel draft we now call Sanditon.

I now wear part of it (“more tenderness”) for many reasons, not least of which is that tomorrow is not promised, & to meet the world with a tender heart, open to the reality of pain, is a gift.
This morning I was reading Jane Caplan’s edited collection WRITTEN ON THE BODY to finish the essay I told @jsench.bsky.social I’d write about my Austen tattoo to make up for getting it during Bibliographical Society of America meeting.

I offer you this helpful new antidote for the Scrolling. Made up a rule whereby, whenever I see something I have seen before, I have to stop then and there and put the phone away. Not a perfect solution, but it works on every app and disrupts the moment just enough to let in the light again
