the real glory of world war two was that it involved a warrior cult being ground down and beaten to a pulp by people who would rather have been doing something else.

Useful technology for storing renewable energy and using it to heat buildings.

We need to stop burning necrofuels yesterday, folks.
Sand batteries are literally just silos of sand that retain heat exceptionally well -- so well that they can be tied to heat exchange systems to serve as proxy *electrical* batteries. Finland's new model can store enough power (100 MWh) to heat an entire town for a week.

The world's largest sand battery just went live in Finland
Finland has inaugurated an industrial-scale sand battery this week in the southern town of Pornainen, where it'll take over heating duties from an old woodchip power plant for the municipality. It's s...

Right-wing parties benefit from economic crises—currency crashes, debt crises, inflation crises, or banking crises. And if the incumbent party is right wing, further right parties benefit. Downstream effects also include conservative shifts in public opinion.

As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

It's simply amazing to me that the U.S. spent 70 years (1945-2015) constructing a post-WW2 military, economic, and social world order to its liking, only to turn around and decide it was actually the victim of this order the entire time.

Was talking with a friend about the wide-eyed sense of wonder that characterizes US media coverage of Trump's power grab.

And I think a lot of the complacency comes from a self-satisfied belief in the US that its constitutional system had somehow "solved" the ineradicable challenges of government.

I also wonder how much of this is connected to the decline in religiosity among Americans. Over the past 30 years or so there has been a steady decline in belief, church attendance, and church membership. People used to find meaning, purpose, belonging, ethics, and transcendence from religion.
I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, it’s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. It’s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine they’re in The Parallax View.
One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

I've said often, based on history, that there's no reasonable expectation most people will be courageous in the face of fascism. Bravery is rare. It's valued for a reason: Most people aren't cut out for it, for reasons good and bad.

But man, you'd still sorta hope the ABA woulda held the line.

Very important observation.

Feels very much like this in Germany at the moment, where - interestingly, in contrast to the EU elections last year - in the media discussion all the momentum is with the AfD, and its rise is portrayed as almost inevitable.

This is a pretty deep point.

There’s something weird about guys with Fuck You money who *only* say “fuck you” to people lower than them on the food chain, but are constantly sucking up to people higher than they are.
I would think that the entire fun of being a billionaire would be never having to suck up to anyone, least of all dipshits like Donald Trump, but apparently I’m wrong.

Sorry I can only endorse this once. No decent writer or thinker just superimposes ideas on subjects. Writing is discovery. I don’t really know what I think until I start writing.
Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
