Keir Starmer’s policies on Scottish industry risk repeating the economic devastation caused by Thatcher in the 1980s.

This morning, I’ll set out how independence is fresh start we need - putting Scotland’s wealth in Scotland’s hands.

Tune in live on the SNP channels at 10am.

Unfortunately my MP is Zubir Ahmed. When I emailed him about this he replied that “Labour is a party of integrity, and remains the party that will best protect the most vulnerable in our society,” presumably with a straight face.
The Home Secretary’s sweeping new immigration plans have been praised by Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage.

We can't accept a system that exposes people to hostility and hatred.

Please ask your MP to choose compassion, not cruelty and oppose these harsh proposals

I’ve made this point before but it bears repeating: do these people think Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization didn't change the rights women had? That any abortion rights they had in the decades between Roe and that judgment were a fiction?
Aside from the ridiculous “biological people” language, I really hate the sneering dishonesty of “the fiction they had rights that have been taken away”. If you’re a trans woman who’s been in the WI for decades and now can’t remain a member, that’s not a fiction!
Kishwer Falkner in The Times talking about the rights of "biological people". As compared to trans people, who are, of course, non-biological.

This is why:

1. Never stop writing. If you are using AI only use it as a light editor.
2. Politicians should write the first draft of all their speeches to organise their thoughts.
3. Prose is vital to democratic societies.
I strongly believe that writing in single sentence lists as speeches are now makes them a lot worse. You need paragraphs to build arguments and ideas.

Observed here presumably part of the etymology in the same way that laws in English were once said to be “found,” from the theory that laws were universal moral perspectives or naturally-existing rules that were noticed and codified rather than being invented from scratch.
Dutch has a fascinating word for "law": 'wet'.

It comes from Proto-Germanic *witōþan.
Its meaning is reconstructed as "that which is observed".

Old High German had 'wiʒʒōd', Gothic 'witōþ'.

They're related to *witanan, the ancestor of 'to wit', Dutch 'weten', and German 'wissen', all "to know".
The word ‘law’ is connected with ‘legal’, but etymologically they’re entirely unrelated.

‘Law’ is related to the verbs ‘to lie’ and ‘to lay’. It comes from a Germanic word meaning “things that are laid out”.

‘Legal’ is related to ‘loyal’. Both derive from Latin ‘lēx’ (law).

this keeps coming up in the american context but it's true everywhere

if you join a party in scotland you'll get made a branch officer the first meeting you turn up and if you stick around a few months you'll be arguing with the party leader

if you have the time and energy seriously just do it
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

not entirely sure i love the guardian's headline that scottish voters are "embracing" reform and that this is a blow to our self-image as a welcoming country

yes there are arseholes, yes they have supporters, but headlines like these are also what shape the normalisation of those attitudes

What would happen if, say, an attendee accused every gender critical labour attendee of being transgender? Would they be banned upon suspicion?
The Labour party women’s conference will be revived next year with only biological women allowed to vote, but a fringe programme and reception will be open to all regardless of gender and sex, LabourList can reveal.
