My Ubuntu Summit talk is up! Where I talk about:
1. How Desktop UX is effectively dead
2. Why I hate the term UX/UI with the heat of 1000 suns
3. How OSS can actually innovate in #ux

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Saw an ad for One4All digital gift cards, so time for my annual remainder to you all.

Do not buy One4All digital gift cards.

It might seem like a lovely gift but it is incredibly difficult to actually spend the money plus, they will eventually start monthly charges.

Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.

Influencers! Stop normalising the practice of holding a lapel mic in your hand and talking into it. It's utterly stupid, it's meant to be on your shirt/top and ah, what the hell, you'll just ignore me and carry on doing it.

I am a podcast literalist. Existing in other formats in parallel is fine, but if it doesn't have an RSS feed with enclosures, it's straight up not a podcast.

Spotify exclusive? Only on YouTube? Not a podcast.

Podcasting isn't a format or a presentation style. It's a file delivery mechanism.

The numeric keypad as we know it has come quite a long way – in fact, you might be surprised that its journey has not been as simple as it seems.

Francesco Bertelli explains the not-so-simple history in the following article: https://www.doc.cc/articles/a-brief-history-of-the-numeric-keypad
DOC • A brief history of the numeric keypad
Picture the keypad of a telephone and calculator side by side. Can you see the subtle difference between the two without resorting to your smartphone? Don’t worry if you can’t recall the design. Most of us are so used to accepting the common interfaces that we tend to overlook the calculator’s inverted key sequence.

I talk to many professional #UX designers and no one is using genAI in any MEANINGFUL way to revolutionize their design work.

Sure, everyone is playing with it, and it can do some cool parlor tricks, but there isn't anything significant happening in design.

This needs to be said louder.
