We aren't on a slippery slope to a constitutional crisis. We are IN the crisis. Time for leaders - political leaders, business leaders, civic leaders - to pick a side: democracy or autocracy?

Changing the type of fat used to deep fry foods is not going to impact chronic disease or affect obesity rates. RFK Jr.’s idiotic focus on beef tallow is absurd, but what it does is provide a veneer that he’s doing something when in reality his main accomplishment to date is to undermine vaccines.

I think some in the Senate have convinced themselves that the backlash to folding will be limited to “the left” and therefore ignorable.

Those people are deeply and profoundly misreading the moment and the stakes.

Virtually every swing district House Dem walked the plank to vote NO for a reason.

Glad to see the level of engagement, and that questions are being asked. Of course, this is Asheville, which is a blue dot among the mountains red in NC.

Trump triggered an upward spiral of consumer taxes.

"Trade war" invests this with too much martial dignity & dominance energy.

It's not war. It's just piling up a lot of new taxes.

The taxes distort the economy away from efficiency, toward more costly production & higher prices.

In 2019, the National Park Service had a budget of $4 billion but generated over $30 billion in economic activity.

Firing federal workers and cutting public programs is going to end up costing us MORE, not less.
New data from the US Treasury reveals that federal spending was $603 billion in February, which is $36 billion HIGHER than February last year under Biden.

This suggests that DOGE has done nothing to cut spending.
Trump's first month showed $36 billion more in spending than last year
This February's monthly statement showed federal payments that were $36 billion higher than last February's.

Republicans’ partisan spending bill turns the federal government into a slush fund for Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

It’s unthinkable that any Senate Democrat would hand them a blank check by voting for cloture.

To the extent that it matters that Gillibrand is in charge of Senate re-election and messaging this year, maybe someone else should have that position. Someone who, for instance, can read polls that clearly state that Republicans/Trump will be blamed for this.

New Quinniac poll:

If there's a shutdown...

32% blame Dems
31% blame Republicans
22% blame Trump

That's a majority blaming Trump and/or the GOP. Hang tough, Dems.

Can't stress enough how dumb this is. The not-normal government shutdown is already occurring. Democrats must condition any votes by demanding the *re-opening* of the government, i.e. a shutdown of DOGE.

19-20 months from now, Trump will have pushed the economy off a cliff and left the civil service a smouldering husk. If you're a Democratic elected and you think a government shutdown from a CR fight is gonna be the thing voters remember, you need your fucking head examined.

Worth fully reading to understand where we are now. Missing: how to break the cycle.
🧵 I want to follow up this earlier thread by examining why the USA finds itself in the state it does at the moment; the process of disordered discourse capturing state institutions and how it inevitably results in a slide towards authoritarianism, a process we're seeing unfold before our very eyes.
What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.
