I almost view the boomer shooter revival (so named because it’s meant to bring the genre back to its arcadey roots) as an indirect response to how CoD effectively became the video game version of a hoo-rah jingoistic action blockbuster, complete with direct involvement with the Pentagon
“Do violent video games make you violent” as a moral panic was such a shame because it elided the position of violence in the narrative, which DOES have real implications. Playing DOOM does not make you violent, but playing COD does propagandize you into supporting the American imperial project

the point isn't that fiction can control you, it's that if you turn your brain off at every opportunity, you make yourself complacent with shit that might have some really fucking bad consequences if you ignore it.

it's my opinion that a direct consequence of this rhetoric was the thought-terminating cliche of "fiction vs reality" dominating conversations about how fiction is used as a tool of influence, predisposing people to ignoring the effects of propaganda and poisonous discourse completely.

The “CoD Campaign” just isn’t the cultural zeitgeist it used to be. Black Ops 7’s campaign was universally mocked then promptly forgotten after a week.

Nowadays, social media algorithms are way more effective in propagandising someone to join the military. They didn’t have that in 2008!

I kind of worry that there's a whole ton of really strong writing, art, and design talent in Chinese game development that's getting wasted on live service gacha games that will all eventually disappear into the aether

i really thought this was popular knowledge about k pop. i’ve known this a long time .. the level of imitation and cultrual appropriation is insane

it is interesting to know that there are
more black writers and producers enabling the appropriation though.

money is money i guess
I really enjoyed that K-Pop Demon Hunters movie this year. I've watched it three times

The music was great, and k-pop music is an undeniable phenomenon.

But also this....

This has been my frustration with K-Pop's popularity in the US past like Gen 2. Up until recently ive had no problem with the music itself. But there are too many K-Pop fans in the US who live and die for K-Pop but don't fuck with the exact same type of music when it comes from Black Artists.

ICE raids are not the first time this was made explicit. I think people downplay how much Jim Crow was not just about controlling Black people but it was also about controlling white people. If you thought racism was dumb and acted that way you could end up with a bomb in your home
Just keep coming back to the fact that keeping people in a constant state of terror is a form of mass disablement and essential to the eugenic project that is the United States.

K Pop Demon Hunters winning best song over Sinners is predictable and still frustrating.

I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

"The influence of American comics on Japanese manga has often been acknowledged, yet rarely examined in depth, even in Japan. This is partly because, from the very beginning, that influence operated not at the level of structure or narrative grammar"

I have to say, as a man with two mothers, I find the derisive deployment of language like "lesbian" and "lover" by those on the far right who are trying to justify Renee Good's death particularly disgusting and dehumanizing. These women. They are wives. They are a family. That's it.

Once again saying this because I see some Democratic politicians saying ICE needs better training.

No, you don't need to train the state terror agency to only do state terror to the "right people". You need to abolish the state terror agency and then hold everyone involved accountable.
there is no amount of training or vetting that would make ICE safe because ICE exists to enact state terror and violence

Renee Nicole Good was 37. She was murdered by an ICE agent in the street in broad daylight. What really happened to her will not be forgotten, minimized, or ignored.
