So many things would be improved for fat people if medical research had to include fat people alongside thin people.
Surgeries, drug trials, nutrition, anesthesia, pain treatment...even the size of things like blood pressure cuffs. All of these things were developed by studying ONLY THIN PEOPLE.

I genuinely don't think modern medicine will ever be prepared to serve the needs and problems of obesity until it becomes a field akin to gerontology that studies the obese existence as a holistic system. So long as medical professionals treat it with the same heedlessness as the flu, we're fucked.
