Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

if I were a Houston TX resident I’d be pretty steamed over this if I’m honest
It's getting buried, but Houston will almost certainly not have representation in Congress until January 2027.

Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died nearly a month ago and Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has simply decided not to call a special election to fill the seat.

NEW: There's no reason to act like Trump is pursuing a trade policy or an industrial revitalization strategy.
These are just sanctions, imposed to intimidate countries and companies into submission like they're universities or law firms. They're what a mob boss would do.

They’re Not Tariffs, They’re Sanctions
Stop trying to place coherence on a policy that’s really just a mob boss breaking legs and asking for protection money.

So much conservative rhetoric has posited that apocalypse looms in New Deal liberalism and even its centrist successors. Ronald Reagan’s famous 1961 speech about Medicare—still fondly quoted by Republicans—was full of inaccurate predictions about the disaster that would ensue if it was adopted./1

The worst part of this is that even if manufacturing jobs came back because of this (they won’t)
and even if Americans retooled for those jobs (they won’t) those jobs sucked! It’s like demanding to return to being a farming society. People fled that life the instant they could, in the millions!

ayup.
Lost in all of the talk about tariffs is probably the most important aspect of free trade: It prevents wars.

While there will be lots of articles in the next few days about the impact of tariffs on global markets and the economy, I am more concerned about their impact on global peace.

Apropos of nothing: Kamala Harris predicted this exact moment happening:

“Understand that part of Trump’s plan is to put in place a national sales tax of at least 20% on everyday goods and necessities.”

She warned us over & over again & she was so right.

I’m losing my mind on tariffs. We spent 90 years systematically dismantling protectionism (GATT, WTO, NAFTA) and a mad king exercising *extremely* dubious delegated authority just set us back a century by fiat.

A properly free press would be libbing out right now. It doesn't need to look like mirror-universe Fox News. It could look like a huge endowment for Pro Publica that pays for hundreds of feral reporters to descend on Washington like foxes.

The economics of Tesla aren’t that great once you eliminate Musk’s reality distortion field. Their current P/E is ~143, while most car makers are closer to like, 5-10. This implies the stock is overpriced by 10-30x if we treated them like a normal company.

anyway fire up the five calls app, esp. if you have republican reps, and demand they explain why they want to gut medicaid, tell them why that’s a terrible idea, and ask if they agree with the president that america is fat and disgusting and incompetent
i was just reading an article last night about *multiple* congressional republicans being upset about this kind of dehumanizing shit directed at federal workers from musk (because they're hearing it from constituents), and trump's now tripling down on it directed at all americans
