Our Democratic elected officials are not rising to this moment so most of them must go.

Any elected official who isn’t willing to organize a Project 2029 around punishing everyone in the Trump administration in order to save democracy must go.

America has a housing shortage. Every single housing proposal you see that is not "build more housing" will have the primary effect of pushing up the prices of existing housing, and is therefore, in reality, a plan to enrich current homeowners. In conclusion, build more housing.

one of the things i hate most about this persistent line of argument is the implication that any of these actions would be fine if groceries were cheaper

Where’s the same focus on lowering costs?

The older I get, the more I believe all our "safety net" programs should be open to all, with no income or other restrictions.
No. No. No.

Punitive processes make narrowly targeted programs *less* efficient and *more* costly. Because more scrutiny requires more bureaucracy.

Punitive processes also make it *less* likely that people will get aid for which they qualify. Because of the roadblocks and stigma scrutiny creates.

Pentagon demands journalists pledge to not obtain unauthorized material
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is imposing strict new rules that would severely limit the ability of journalists to report on the Pentagon.

I've noticed lately the Seattle Times doesn't like to use actual names in headlines. (Seen a lot of "Mariners player.") This skeet and preview says "indie rockers" 3 times without naming the band.

cash assistance, housing first, permanent supportive housing

I know I've said that before but I can't get over it. We know how to solve a serious social issue, but we choose not to. Instead we're spending more money to make it worse just to be cruel to people who can't fight back. I don't know how to fix a cultural rot like that.

Even if you don't have an ounce of altruism or empathy, and your only goal was to not have to lay eyes on The Untouchable Caste day-to-day, it'd be not only more effective but cheaper to provide housing and social services for unhoused people than to have cops chase them around the city with guns.

Just to level set on this:

What they have experienced are some of the worst things that a government could possibly do to people. There is absolutely nothing that happened here that should have happened. The people responsible for this should have it follow them the rest of their lives.

I would like my state, every state, to mandate badges, name plates, no masks, for all law enforcement in the state. And if federal agents try to break the mandate, arrest them, then let the courts sort it out.

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

my most Gen X coded belief is that cities and the culture at large suffer profoundly for the near-complete death of alt-weeklies
I still think the best idea for progressive donors is to just revive every alt-weekly in the country and staff them with 10 reporters each.

you don’t need to explain the reasons in the replies I promise, but it’s still so dumbfounding that the “we are going to take your money and give it to people who are already richer than you, we have done it before and will do it again” party has ever won a single election

I want so much for those in government to work to make lives better for all people, especially those struggling. It's always been rarer than it should be, and now anything working toward that goal is being destroyed. It wasn't nearly enough, and it'll take so long to get back.
