network state
People keep wondering why they're going after Venezuela. It's because they want to do regime change and control its oil, then use a big tract of land there to keep a tax free "network state" that looks like Dubai but operates like Rhodesia. They are saying this out loud! Believe them!

things that cost more than an annual COYOTE membership ($68) right now:

roast chicken at Zuni Cafe in SF ($75)
basket weaving kit ($98)
the Wildfang Oxford button-up that I’m always looking at ($88)
ChatGPT Plus for DIY mental breakdowns ($120)
6,480 Genesis Crystals in Genshin Impact ($100)
Over at @coyotemedia.org my colleagues and I are trying to build a new, worker-owned outlet in the Bay Area. We've already broken stories and had impact. To continue that work we need more members, plain and simple. And now you can get a discount!

after yet another BART delay, i boarded a train that happened to have a new Very Loud chime sound—and the chime is constant thru the WHOLE RIDE except for pauses for upcoming station announcements.

we don't need more noise pollution. the loud wheels are loud enough.

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.

This chapter of the @thewaroncars.bsky.social new book is hard to read as a parent. It’s one of the big motivations that I’ve become a more vocal advocate but the timescales for change in our area are just sooooo long. The freedom and growth we’ve taken from kids is just shameful to think about.

We’ve gotta make it clear to the mayor that doing the bare minimum isn’t an option on this ballot measure. We need this to build a better MUNI, not just barely keep the lights on!

I've been slowly trying to better understand why California seems structurally setup to fail on sustainable transportation. This article raises as many questions as it answers, but it's an amazing resource in terms of documenting some of top-line problems.

We're half a decade into studies finding that improving airflow in classrooms will reduce disease transmission enormously, and that bleaching surfaces etc. does very little. And yet nothing changes. Waves of flu and colds wash over schools, and the schools pretend it's an act of God.

another colombian example to disprove conventional urbanist wisdom - Bogotá shows that you don't need to remove buses and build a street-running tram to make a pleasant, lively, walkable streetscape in your city centre.

bogotá does it better than any NA city with a bus-only street for their BRT.

For anybody unfamiliar with the last 10+ years of housing politics in America, San Francisco legalizing 8-story apartments in most of the city including its wealthy neighborhoods (and up to 65 stories in some places!) is like PETA opening a steakhouse.
Holy shit San Francisco!

60% of the city rezoned, most places exceeding (!!) SB 79. The most restrictive of these allows attached 4–8 story apt buildings with no cap on the # of homes inside, no parking mandates, and by-right streamlined approval.
