Hey All: Google is pulling the "automatically on for anyone over 18" bullshit with Gemini that the Dropbox did for its AI, but I can't afford to ditch Google Drive/Docs/Workspace.

If you have a personal Google Account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off...

Been feeling sad about the state of things and thinking about “what to do?”
Yesterday had an opportunity to spontaneously do something for 2 people who needed help. Cost us 20 minutes and $10. Can recommend.
It’s possible to help yourself by helping others. Not everything is a grand gesture.

The National Gallery in London is renovating its Sainsbury Wing and they’ve just found a secret letter from one of the original donors, sunk into a concrete column, saying that he hates the columns and is glad they’re being demolished.

I think it’s a first for my lifetime to hear two powerful women—Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris— make lessons learned from their mothers a central theme in speeches at a political convention. I’m here for the rise of matriarchy in public life.

The secret of policy is that it’s just an idea translated into a series of rules designed to reach a goal. If your policy is to minimize car traffic, you might set aside money for creating pedestrian plazas, institute congestion pricing (ahem), decrease speed limits, facilitate raised crosswalks…

Newsies that followed me: if you've seen me post a bunch of 'don't engage. Block and move on" posts, this is why. This is how blocking works here. It doesn't just hide an abuser's posts from you, it kills the whole chain. It basically cuts off trolls at the knees and cauterizes the wound. It's great
They are discovering very quickly how blocking is happening here, and they are having a sad.

Jess Phillips was at the Kiln Theatre last week, and in the Q&A I asked her a question to do with the relationship between extremism and domestic abuse. Her response – and that of presenter Helen Lewis @helenlewis.bsky.app – was very thoughtful 1/2
Let's try not to mess this up.

Absolutely right. Extreme misogyny is an ideology in its own right and the growing radicalising of young men is a worrying trend. This is an important step in tacking violence against women and girls.

If I could make a plea for BlueSky, it’s this: Please make a point of sharing links to articles, essays and more that you LOVE, that you enjoyed, that expanded you in some way.

I’m always surprised by the dominance of hate-shares, complaint shares on here. And I think it has a riptide effect.

I'll let you know about relevant campaigns in the future, thank you!
Ending violence against women is one of the driving forces of my politics. I used to work for the brilliant SafeLives for a while. If you ever think there is something I need to know about and raise, please tell me! And thank you for the work you do to keep women and children safe.
