One of the things I really appreciate about an author like Toni Morrison is that she can have her characters utter a righteous condemnation of dominant culture and then, on the same page, do some flawed, messy shit that nonetheless never invalidates the critique.

I think a lot of dysfunction on here comes from the idea that suffering makes you right and the more you suffer, the righter you are. Thus, whenever a person who is in some way disadvantaged disagrees with you, it becomes imperative to argue they aren't the right kind of trans, black, etc.

I've seen in some left-leaning circles a weird obsession of labelling white trans people as racists or saying there's a huge epidemic of KKK racism among the trans community and can't help but think is basically this but with transphobia

I don't know what of the old constitution is left anyway if the president has absolute immunity and all the enumerated Article I powers are actually plenary powers of the president. It's the opposite of what our constitution had meant for 250 years, and is unknown in English tradition.

Bray is a historian at Rutgers who received death threats after landing on Turning Points USA's Professor Watchlist. As a result, he announced he was moving to Europe. And then this happened.

This kind of harassment and abuse of scholars is Charlie Kirk's legacy and it's only getting worse.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

Goosebumps watching this. Chicagoans fighting for this country. Mass collective action is the only thing that can keep fascism away.

The mistake some make imho is they recognize that language policing shouldn't be practically significant (because it really doesn't matter much and you can ignore it) and assume it must therefore have no political significance (in fact, it drives people crazy).

Despite not being Extremely Mad about it, I feel compelled to say the language policing absolutely exists at universities and is annoying. That said I think professors and writers tend to general an annoying thing about their workplace to the world at large.
michaelhobbes.bsky.social
The phenomenon of “leftist language policing” is 99% a product of centrists whining about it constantly. I almost never encounter it in real life and requests for vocabulary updates are typically non-binding guidelines for formal written documents.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
This take is worth what you paid for it, but I think the language policing stuff has outsized political significance.

yeah, ezra basically believes that left-liberalism is doomed and we have to dislodge the current ruling party at whatever cost with whatever coalition we can piece together. its extrapolating way too much from 2024 which was more about the overarching landscape than the policy or messaging

just my two cents on Ezra Klein: he is generally good on policy and his work on things like housing is helpful

the problem is that his punditry is misguided for two reasons:

1) he is not skeptical enough of right wing bad faith

2) he is acting like the U.S. is Hungary, where the right is popular

I spent more than a decade at The Post. It was good to me and I was proud to work there. I’ve largely refrained from being critical since I left. But this framing of the special counsel probe is embarrassing and flatly wrong. Stunning, but not. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
