I don't like it, but I'll have to go along with it.

Partridge, history, politics, crap references and probably asinine takes is the aim, shitposting is the game
One of my fav Anglo Saxon trends is that up to the Norman Conquest, the Anglo Saxons had war horses whose purpose was to transport warriors to the field of battle. Mounted warfare doesn't arrive until the Norman Conquest, and even then, English horses were not the big war horses everyone else had.
Today I learned that chariot riding in warfare came before horse riding in warfare, which seems counter-intuitive.

What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Tree climbing. I used to be like a squirrel until I was 12 and then just lost all interest
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Summer of '95 I had a job assembling single-use film cameras, which I did enough that I can still perform the actions. I don't think they even sell them anymore, but even if they do I'm certainly never going to be making them again!
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

In the summer of ‘88, I had a job where I installed cell phones into cars. No one has needed that skill in over 30 years.

Starmer is much more of a Minecraft player. Neat, ordered town with animals kept as far away as they were irl.

Badenoch however would play Bloodbourne and identify the sickness killing Yharnam as wokeness
I would quite enjoy watching a stream of Starmer playing GTA.

Funny old time. I'd just missed my deadline for my dissertation equivalent, drowning in debt and working near full time to keep afloat in my student house. I remember noticing Covid more and more but thinking that this would be like swineflu, and then my coworkers were suddenly self-isolating
I would really really love to hear other people's notes/strong memories about the specifics of this. I feel like we were all in such trauma that the memories have vanished fast, leaving a blanket of "oh god yuck awful" which isn't helpful for understanding how it's affected us.

#fiveyearson
I have this feeling that over the next few weeks I might like to note and mark what I was doing five years ago. Because it is big and real and still feels incredibly present in our lives.

I'll use the hashtag #fiveyearson which as far as I can tell is only used about Covid. Do mute if you need.

Baguette bread, slightly hollowed out, butter, English mustard to act as a glue at the top, salami, red onion, rocket and a slight sprinking of grated cheese: with some paprika crisps if there's room left. Heavenly.

The Norman conquest, and it's associated events, really bear a closer examination than just the events of 1066.

I really hope the Millenial anniversary captures the imagination the way it should
When asked for advice for young entrepreneurs, the previous Duke of Westminster, Gerald Grosvenor, replied: “Make sure they have an ancestor who was a very close friend of William the Conqueror.” Today, less than 1% of the population owns at least half of England. @tortoisemedia.bsky.social
