Here’s MY Summer 2025 reading list. I used fucking Canva to do a better job in less than thirty minutes than that shitty AI article did, and I used 99% less potable water to do so.
Cannot believe people are actually being paid to do LESS work than this.

there is a genre of person who hates AI in *their* field but sees how it could be useful in *other,* less prestigious, fields; ignore them. they are not trying to save the ship. they are just racing you to the lifeboats
Translators, illustrators, researchers and editors all do creative, human work that is important and cannot be reproduced in part or in whole by AI any more than writers. Their interests are our interests. To legitimize the use of AI to replace them is a failure of principle as much as strategy.

The judge also ordered that teachers have a right to misgender trans youth even when the parents know of and are supportive of their trans child. Just in case you thought this was actually about parental rights.
24 Dec 2025 @rikiwilchins.bsky.social -- Judge overturns CA school policy on outing trans kids, rules parents have right to know & teachers a right to tell them but no mention of child's rights. Case likely bound for Supremes. Weirdly CA law allows abortion w/o parental notification.
Federal judge rules California teachers are allowed to ‘out’ transgender students to parents
The ruling applies to all public schools in California and is a victory for two teachers who claimed that district policies violated their constitutional free speech and religious rights.

I'd argue it's worse than a blank page, in the same way that garment pieces cut slightly off the grain are worse than not having cut yet.

When a thing is wrong, it will suck your energy into making it Less Wrong, which is often not the same as making it right.
Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.
I know I don’t talk about writing much. It is because I am writing so slowly.

But I want you to know that I am taking a part of this story that absolutely sucked and took me months to produce four of the worst chapters I have ever written and in the edit I figured out how to fix it.

Important 🧵.

I've friends writing in every branch of fiction. Pay attention when a sales silo is hit.

Books are under attack on multiple fronts. Care when it erupts in another area--because this is another mirror/shadow of "real life."

Certain groups are coming for all of us eventually.
It is about this: because so many people do not give a shit about romance, shit gets tried in romance first.

You should pay attention to romance publishing news and care about it, because they will try that shit here first.

And please also, AGAIN, never forget that they are inherently unethical to use because no one gave permission for their research or writing to be used in it. It is all stolen, and if you're using the plagiarism machine, please keep that in mind.
My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!”

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

As if we haven’t all been saying the same thing since 2016.

Speaking of which I finished listening to Corey Doctorow’s #enshittification today on @libbyapp.com. I rarely purchase books after having already listened to/read them, but this one is getting a buy. Everyone should read it. We all need to get on board with the disenshittification process ASAP.

I’m not a writer or in publishing, but I spend an obscene amount of cold hard cash on books every year and I’ve permanently boycotted WAY bigger fish over way less. “AI” has no place in publishing. If a pub needs a slop-bot to edit, they suck at their job and should resign in shame and disgrace.
Hearing murmurs that publishing houses are pushing editors to use AI in their work. How can writers help employees push back against this? If you work in publishing & don’t feel comfortable replying directly, I am opening up my DMs.

🖋️ “Congress: Impeach and Remove Pam Bondi from the Office of Atty. General” hit 100 signers!

Congress: Impeach and Remove Pam Bondi from the Office of Atty. General
Text SIGN PSOHPU to 50409 — Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to begin impeachment proceedings for Attorney General Pam Bondi. Not only has she lied to Congress and the public she allegedly serves she continues her horrific record on civil rights and her actions border on sedition and undermine our democratic processes. Pam Bondi's support for efforts to overturn the 2020 election was already deeply alarming and disqualifying for the role of the nation's top law enforcement officer. The Attorney General must be committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting our democratic institutions, not undermining them for political gain. There isn’t a single civil rights organization that hasn’t spoken against her. Many civil rights organizations have detailed her problematic stances on crucial matters such as voting rights, LGBTQ rights, the census, and access to health care and reproductive rights. These positions indicate that she is the very antithesis of the rule of law, which is a fundamental responsibility of the Attorney General. Her continuous lying for the cameras about the Epstein case, including her utter failure to investigate Epstein when she was Attorney General in Florida adds to her soiled record. The Justice Department's independence from political influence is paramount, especially in these times of heightened threats to our multiracial democracy and fundamental rights. Bondi's responses during Senate hearings have only made her seem weaker and more ingratiating to the lawlessness that now confounds our country. If it were possible, a full investigation into her complicity in crimes throughout this administration ought to be a next step. However in the absence of that, calling for her eventual impeachment and removal is the only option. As your constituent, I ask that you prioritize the protection of civil and human rights. Pam Bondi isn’t capable, reasonable or truthful. Impeach and remove Pam Bondi. Thank you.

ABA shouldn’t be the gold standard for anything. It’s predatory toward parents, abusive toward patients, and takes advantage of under-trained “therapists” who often don’t have so much as a certificate in childcare, childhood development, developmental disabilities, etc etc etc.

I’m baffled by people voluntarily traveling under the current admin. Planes falling out of the sky and ICE snatching people up with absolutely no rhyme or reason. Girlfriend and I are on a self-imposed travel ban for the indefinite future.
Traveling this holiday season? There are steps you can take to safeguard your privacy if your phone or laptop is searched by immigration agents at the airport or other port of entry.

Know your rights and protect your information.
Can Border Agents Search Your Electronic Devices? It’s Complicated. | ACLU
We’ve been getting a lot of questions about when border agents can legally conduct searches of travelers’ electronic devices at international airports and other ports of entry. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t simple.

There's no real social benefit to commercial gambling and there's a massive difference between the sudden heavy investment in casinos across NYC and your weekly poker game with a 20 dollar buy in.
I am not a moral absolutist about gambling. I’ve been to Vegas and Atlantic City and several casinos in Connecticut and Maryland, and I used to play pick up poker with buddies in college. But the degree to which our society has expanded it in recent decades strikes me as a sickness, a rot.
