Long read, very instructive on the mechanisms & misconceptions re LC. „Long COVID is blood vessel damage, brain damage, organ damage, immune system damage, and mitochondrial damage. It is real, it is devastating, and it is happening to people every day. And it can happen to you, after any infection“
Worked hard on this, and I hope it will be a useful resource for many.

A beginner’s guide to Long COVID, with a discussion of mechanisms:

I just found out that someone I was close to who had the same disease as I do, just passed away today. One thing that isn’t talked about enough is how often the disability community grieves from those who pass away too soon due to our diagnosis. It’s a kind of grief that most don’t understand.

An entire lineage of influenza B viruses literally went extinct due to COVID mitigation measures and people will still say “masks don’t work”
I don't know if regular people will ever realize how insane it was that we literally did not have a flu or RSV season in January 2021.

Today in @thesicktimes.bsky.social, Jenna Laila Bitar writes about the experience of being a Palestinian American with Long COVID.

"When I reflect on my own experience of disability...sometimes it feels like a manifestation of generational trauma."

Y’all, mask up! This ain’t a joke. You’re not just breathing in ash from burnt trees and bushes. You’re breathing in ash from burnt HOMES. Not just the wood, every single thing that can be found in a home. Appliances, electronics, etc.

Not the news I’d hope to share but—NIH’s massive Long Covid study has a new paper finding 1 in 22 participants who had Covid developed the neuro disease I have, ME/CFS.

80% of people w/ME are too sick to hold a full-time job—gov abandoning us to face this risk on a daily basis is unconscionable.

This is an incredibly stunning anti-science, anti-life, anti-medicine action by the CDC.

Every public health physician needs to disavow this.
IMPORTANT

The US CDC has announced that, going forward, reported SARS-CoV-2 wastewater levels will be normalized to an endemic baseline

"Zero" on this baseline will be levels in the previous year

The biggest threat to all of us is climate change. In 2024 we hit >1.5C global warming, well in advance of when scientists thought it would happen. Here are some of the graphics I’ve come across that I think are helpful in communicating to skeptics. Please share as needed—we are running out of time

This type of cognitive impairment is so badly underestimated.

I lost the ability to read for months and to communicate for years. It was like juggling with 50 balls. Impossible.

I lost almost all income and have nothing in life because of it.

We need answers ASAP.

These numbers are crazy. A generation of young people with dementia waits for us in the near future, and we are not prepared for that. #NeuroCovid

People with #LongCOVID deserve equal access to prescriptions that could lessen their symptom burden & information about potential risks.

More about how & why in this op-ed by Charlie McCone & me which was sparked by a discussion the @patientled.bsky.social team:

‘Do no harm’ is hurting 400 million long Covid patients worldwide
Opinion: Some medications for #LongCovid that are already on the market may provide relief. Obtaining them requires a lot of time and money.

The disease is end-stage capitalism. It's terminal, barring a miraculous intervention or global upheaval.

The symptoms: corporate greed, climate breakdown caused by oil execs, genocide, colonialism, unrelenting pandemics, wealth inequality, gun violence etc

Disabled people are not acceptable casualties.

Not during natural disasters.
Not during a pandemic.
Not during climate collapse.
Not for profit.
Not for optics.
Not at protests.
Not at school.
Not for election goals.
Not for personal comfort.

There is no justice without disability justice.

“But the people who died had preexisting conditions.” So what? Does that mean their lives didn’t matter? Does that mean they weren’t important? Disabled people can hear you when you excuse our deaths. Our lives have value.

Mask blocs have been doing heroic work distributing tens of thousands of masks to communities exposed to dangerous wildfire smoke. This is incredible, but we should also be outraged that it has been left to people with limited resources who have been abandoned by the state to do this critical work.

Time to share this quick air filter solution for wildfire smoke once again. All you need is a box fan and a home air/furnace filter that you can get at pretty much any hardware store. Optional is some duct tape to get a good seal. Stay safe! #LAFires

That’s multiple other people potentially exposed… which is why we need masks in healthcare now.

If you see a mask - wear a mask. Better yet - wear a mask all the time and show us you understand that we're still IN a pandemic. We are depending on you to keep us safe - please don't betray that.
