Fiona Katauskas’ cartoon for the guardian.
It’s the calm before the storm, before the last bag is packed, before the flight is checked in on and the last minute is purchased. I am, yet again, agog.

Years after my parents gifted my kiddo a magnetic perpetual motion office toy, I knocked it into momentum as I closed a window blind before holidays. Lo and behold it is still going, squeaking in sotto voce.

Lightening my heart with a chapter of tara brach’s radical acceptance and james broughton’s ode to gaiety, from a 90s book on gay soul. Any port in a storm, eh.

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, sound garden, pearl jam, or alice in chains.

My school friends eyed grace with suspicion, concluding it was “probably christian rock”.

Hark! An angel on my metacarpophalangeal joint!
How delicately a Romanesque angel uses the lightest touch of a finger to wake one of the magi, snuggled with the other 2 under their embroidered circular blanket at St Lazare, Autun, c1130 (& how beautifully the textures of pillow & blanket are represented).

Season's greetings to you all!

Walking on, walking on broken glass…
Turns out even in the world of stained glass, issues of data standards, data interoperabililty and long term archiving are prevalent. Everything is a database problem in the end

A most delightful thread of tiny wondrous things!
I have no idea where this year went but it's December 1st again, so here we go

Day 1 of my 2025 Favorites: I tried my hand at tide-pooling shenanigans, and found PISTOL SHRAMPS 😍
They use that giant claw to kill things with a shock wave, and that's just fun.

It’s… not cosplaying as seaweed?
It’s… not having an existential crisis re humans?
It’s… not cross species communication and a sentient extension of that bronze sculpture of govt ministers arguing themselves under water as the seas rise?

@grimalkina.bsky.social would love your integrity analysis of this study since I’m torn between exalting “Poets can save us from AI if they use their deadly powers wisely” and “Crap. Creatives don’t need another reason to increase mainstream suspicion of high falutin’ fancy word skulduggery”.

Excellent piece.

You guys! The etymology of browse is plant-based and alludes to sprouting and searching for shoots and leaves! I am once again, agog. 🌱 www.etymonline.com/word/browse
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

What a lovely image after listening to Juno the photographer interviewed on Archive Fever, and playing Jupiter from Holst’s Planets Suite with my Cello Gang. O hai Zeitgeist.
Io beauty shot.

Taken by the Juno spacecraft on 3 February 2024.

The right-hand hemisphere is illuminated by the Sun.

On the left, the night side isn't totally dark because of Jupitershine.
