In today's English classes, kids often read just snippets of novels — and that's a shame
Reading "The Grapes of Wrath" for the first time reminded me — there's nothing like being lost in a book.

"But Kirk, the real genius of Muad'Dib's strategy was that he knew, and Shaddam IV didn't, that the Atreides family atomics were ready to make a new path to Arrakeen. When Stilgar and the Fedaykin appeared astride Makers in the new gap, the Battle for Arrakeen was all but over. Arrakis was Fremen."

Watching far-right figures on Twitter instantly pivot from "You won't see us mock Reiner!" to openly celebrating Trump mocking Reiner makes it clear how much the modern far right relies on communication being remote and often anonymous. Because if you said this in a room, you might not ever leave it

Just so we’re clear, everybody calling Kilmar Abrego Garcia a “terrorist” or a “gang member” are lying, and they know they’re lying, and they repeat it for purposes of confusing people who don’t follow this stuff closely into accepting what was done to him.

Green card holder from New Hampshire 'interrogated' at Logan Airport, detained
Fabian Schmidt’s family said they are unsure of why he is being held. They said he has a recently renewed green card, and no active issues in court.

AOC has them sputtering mad because she’s educating people on constitutional rights. You don’t see them freaking out at Jeffries for talking about egg prices.

I’ve been thinking a lot, like everyone else, about What Can Be Done when #Democrats have no institutional power & the media ignores them.

I think they need to get WAY more theatrical.

Do wild stunts the media can’t look away from. Stop being respectable.

Being a Dem voter is like watching your house burn down with no one in sight, and then four days later, the firefighter chief shows up while you’re standing in the ashes and explains he was actually there fighting as hard as he could, you just couldn’t see, and there was just nothing to be done

a lesson people oughta take from the rise of bluesky is that buying into anybody's claimed hegemony online is dopey. Facebook didn't used to exist, neither did Instagram or TikTok or any of this stuff. as soon as any platform starts to stink no sentimental attachment is practical or good. bail ASAP

the entire point of climate denial is to enable the 1% to get as rich as they possibly can before the consequences of their actions come around. now that the consequences are hitting, they're cashing out and building underground bunkers.

Joe Biden is a perfectly fine, solid center-left president. The guy running against him is a corrupt proto-fascist criminal oligarch. The US economy is strong, wages for the lowest quintile are rising fast, wage inequality falling, inflation is under 5%. So naturally it’s a toss-up

I think one of the worst quirks of online spaces is the idea that if someone doesn't post about something, they don't care about it. It encourages performative posting often makes things worse.

I care a lot. I just don't want to add another poorly-informed voice. I'm reading & thinking.

I've now seen several big blue accounts post "the election is in 13 months!," & that's very revealing. Because in just 1 month, there's a supreme court race, in Pennsylvania of all places, for a justice likely to rule on 2024 stuff, & GOP is bigly outspending Dems to little care.
