40s, late diagnosed AuDHD ♾️
Trying to be positive and look on the bright side of everything
As a late diagnosed #autistic person, I've struggled with how to "categorize" myself and how to explain myself to NTs. I think this is a journey many #LateDiagnosed people go through. Self doubt of diagnosis, how to cope with new understanding of self, 1/
You’re not mildly autistic.

This is going to be a tough take for some out there but that doesn’t exist.

I am sick and tired of seeing posts that describe themselves or others as mildly.

As I always do with boycotts, I urge: be tough with corporations, gentle with individual buyers. For some people, Black Friday sales are the way they get their kids jackets that fit, shoes that hold up to the weather. Yelling at them doesn’t help the cause.

Me: Okay, no politics at my place during thanksgiving

Thanksgiving REALLY stretched to breaking my executive function this year.
Or does it always and this year I just understood what was happening?

I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

I love language and words and history and learning how words became what they mean today.
Credenza is a verb for the act of sampling food to prevent another person from becoming poisoned.

Credenza became the name of the room and then the furniture and structures used for the act of Credenza.

The furnitures and structures kept the name Credenza after the act of Credenza was stopped.

Autistic people aren’t “bad at following instructions”

Many autistic people are actually excellent at following instructions

The problem?

👉 The instructions are unclear, vague or inconsistent

What’s important is:
- clear steps
- clear expectations
- clear outcomes
- clear deadlines

This is logical behavior... because it's a logical response to an unmet need.

And as I keep saying over and over again, autistic needs are human needs.

What's different is how quickly, frequently, and intensely our brains react to our needs not being met.

This is so difficult for me at work (explained more in the 🧵)
I literally try to make my brain learn things that are needed for me to do my job and my brain decides what is and isn't useful to retain and just turns off sometimes. It's very frustrating.
When you're autistic, your brain will literally refuse to take in information it doesn't deem useful. It's why so many of us struggle socially.

- Our brains often see small talk as useless

- When topics come up that aren't of interest (like sports, fashion...), our brains see that as useless...

Please get out of Firefox
I would not, could not, on the phone
Please just leave my calls alone
I will not, will not, even free
LLMs, just leave me be!
I do not like your AI slop
I do not want this worthless glop
I do not read its overviews
I don't care what Grok says is true
I do not like it here nor there
I'm tired of it everywhere

Autism pro tip - you can use instacart to scout out groceries in new places before you go there so you know you won't die.

You don't have to order from them lol

Graeme Hart, 57, believes autism is a horrific scourge on humanity – but that there’s no reason for you, an autistic person, to be so uncivil about it.
“We can disagree and stay friends” says man who thinks you should be eugenicsed out of existence
A man who believes you can disagree on politics and “still love each other” also believes scientists should find out what caused you so someone like you never happens again, and you, personally,…

It’s not vaccines
It’s not Tylenol
It’s not circumcisions
It’s not Tylenol
It’s not vaccines

& it’s also not a fucking problem to be eradicated!

Autism is a natural way of being

We don’t need a cure
The only “cure” is love

Unconditional Accommodation

Acceptance

Autism is not a problem to solve

...and if we do 'cure' whatever it is we think autism is...what else might be damaged? What else might we lose? What other people might be forced into a 'cure' against their will, in a society where 'they are costly burdens' is the narrative?

It's an ethical minefield.
We are nowhere near answers

I want to live in a world where even if there's a "cause" of autism found, the answer would be "so?" But we don't live in that world, and that includes people on all parts of the political spectrum.
