Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
His not being impeached by the end of the business day as a result of this threat is as much a problem as the threat itself. It’s not just Trump that the world has to worry about, it’s a GOP that supports him and Democrats who suck their thumbs and refuse to even discuss pushing to remove him

🎶social norms are enacted evaluations through imposition of costs or rewards of behavior🎶

As in this example in which violence, lawless, white supremacist fascism are all roundly discouraged through public social action.
This makes me feel more patriotic than the national anthem ever could

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

That Trump pardoned another Latin American leader a few weeks ago on the very charges Maduro is being indicted now shows that this is not 4 dimensional chess.

ICE trying to ORDER a church to REMOVE A NATIVITY SCENE is one of the most astonishing First Amendment violations I've seen in ever
ICE’s acting director ordered a Boston Catholic parish to tear down its Advent Nativity scene—stripped of baby Jesus and branded with the message “ICE WAS HERE.” The parish priest is refusing, citing he pope’s call to stand with migrants. It's another chapter in Kristi Noem's war on Christians.
“ICE Was Here”: Pope Leo-Inspired Nativity Scene Sparks MAGA Outrage
A Nativity scene missing Jesus — and marked with an “ICE was here” sign — has triggered cries of “politicizing Christmas.” The parish priest says he’s answering Pope Leo's call to welcome stranger.

I do think the least Democrats can do to message this disaster is hammer that they finally realized a sociopathic leader just doesn’t care how many people suffer in order to win. He would never compromise because he doesn’t care about other people as long as he continues to hoover up dirty money.

Democrats should be drawing up legislation right now, this very minute, to bar Trump from helping himself to $230 million in taxpayer funds from DOJ. Challenge Republicans to hold a vote on it. Push this so hard in the media that every GOP Senate and House candidate is pressed to comment on it.

Some perspective: The ACA part of the shutdown fight is a little less than 0.1% of GDP.
Or ~0.5% of the federal budget.
It's in same ballpark as cost of Trump's estate tax cut.
It's much less than Elon Musk's potential $1 trillion compensation package.

Small point about the coverage of Hegseth’s stupid convening: Trump has not “renamed” the Department of Defense something else. He *calls* it that.

If I started calling the president “Adolf,” one would not say that I had “renamed him Adolf.” He has no more authority to rename DOD than I do him.

AOC: I think there's two things that are happening at once: One, there absolutely is an unprecedented abuse of power, destruction of norms, erosion of our government and our democracy in order to prop up an authoritarian style of governance

For 26 but especially 2028 it's time for Democrats to make clear that the current Supreme Court will have to be reformed (expanded in number, reformed in structure) to allow popular govt to continue in the United States. Not so much a litmus test as precondition for any other promise to be credible.
