I have now finished Empress of the East. It's a really interesting book overall. I've liked Peirce's way of framing the Ottoman system since I read The Imperial Harem so to read her biography of Hürrem that she wrote in conversation with MC has been very cool.

Luxon, and whomever is draughting his speeches, is very clearly pushing an agenda positioning NZ as a safe-space for white supremacist thinking dressed up as 'equality'. It's colonialism 101, being implemented by US imperial interests.

Here are the headline paragraphs. The Ministry emphatically did not recommend this ban, and in fact repeatedly pointed out the significant level of harm it was likely to cause. The consultation found overwhelming support for continued access. The only people who thought different were cabinet.

Seems very apt today when we finally have access to the RIS supposedly supporting a puberty blockers ban, which, on reading, clearly did not. Politicians should not be inserting themselves into personal health care decisions except as it relates to their own health care.
I was a kid once. And my biggest regret in life is that I never got a childhood without pain.
Politicians should never insert themselves into the personal health care decisions of patients, parents, and their providers—and that includes trans Americans.
