There’s a lesson here about writing in the age of weaponized lies: Always precede false claims with giant red text, ideally wrapped in a <blink> tag, that says “THIS IS A LIE I AM REFUTING!!”

But also, why is a book that makes this kind of lazy, bad-faith argumentation getting any accolades at all?

Thanks to @michaelhobbes.bsky.social for this: a prime example of vibe-based liberal commentary devoid of any scientific grounding which ends up syncing up with far-right agit-prop and the authors
have ridden all this nonsense all the way to the bank.
This is genuinely horrifying. Fact-free far-right agitprop given accolades by credible media across the political spectrum.
Congratulations to Stephen Macedo & Frances Lee, whose book In Covid's Wake has been recognized as:

Big social media platforms have become wired to spread bullshit. The people and organizations who worked to understand why, called out the bullshitters, and tried to push for platform changes to counteract manipulation and address harmful misinformation… have been silenced by an admin powered by bs.

Turning Point USA was founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk and Bill Montgomery

Two of their major policy pushes were a more prominent gun culture and zero COVID restrictions

As a journalist I am still shocked by how quickly the attack on the CDC was set aside.
How rarely I have read the name David Rose in the past few months is for me a pretty good indicator of how much a large swathe of US media has failed to meet this moment.)

I deeply admire these young scientists's willingness to stand up and speak out.

As you may have gathered, I love hard data analysis, but I am always picturing real people who use federal support to conduct important research and who are affected by the political shenanigans that are going on.

Thanks for the support! This comment worries me a lot. Not because I need Bhattacharya's validation of my status as a scientist, but because it speaks to his vision of an NIH where program officers are rubber stampers instead of scientists.

New: Months before Bari Weiss pulled the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT, her outlet The Free Press was joking about the megaprison Trump has lawlessly deported people to.

@oniblackstock.bsky.social It's distressing to see how this is playing out. Scientists need to become far more aware of how racism and other aspects of structural bias are *baked into* scientific data. Will be very challenging to counteract, esp. at a time when the word "racism" triggers defunding.

It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines.

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

There's really interesting social science on how white people significantly overestimate the number of people of color in a room or in a picture. A room with, like, 20% POC will be perceived as majority POC.
White men are 30% of the US and if they look around the room and see it’s less than 90% white men they think it’s affirmative action.
85% of CEOs are white men.

All but one US President has been a white man.

65% of all elected offices are held by white men.

Roughly 30% of the population is white men.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS TOPIC EVEN???

28 people have died in ICE custody since Trump took office. These facilities are overcrowded & are putting their own profits over health and safety. We need oversight & accountability NOW.

If any journalist wants to talk to a trans man with a PhD in Human Genomics who was trained in labs that studied the evolution of sex, I'm right here

Or just keep platforming Republicans who have a 5th grade understanding of biology so they get more trans people killed, sure 🤷🏻‍♂️

ICE is required—by law—to ensure detainees are safe & their basic needs are met. It's clear this isn't the case. We NEED answers.
