The same amount of time has now elapsed between when Raiders of the Lost Ark was released (1981) and when it was set (1936) as when it was released and today (45 years).

I find this... offensive.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. The faculty who say we should use AI to grade/give feedback because it's a way for us to "reclaim our time."

Line in the sand.

It isn't our time. It's theirs. If you have such little respect for your students and their time, quit.

Disrespectfully, the rest of us.

This one I do take personally. The custodial staff IS staff. I take them as seriously as anyone else who cares for and interacts with kids in a school. They break up fights, befriend kids, clean up after them and make the built environment reflect the school’s values — how kids see themselves.
I mostly mean, why would anyone spend their time surveying the custodial staff on classroom policy lol

Wow you learn more when you use your brain!
New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays.

Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn.

This is the competition/event that @chrislhayes.bsky.social among others highlighted when Trump/Musk/DOGE cut their ca. $200K grant for “efficiency.” Congrats on making it happen anyway.
my main takeaway after spending the afternoon at the national history day competition is that the kids are pretty alright. also, that reactionaries are right to fear the consequences of kids learning the truth.

I resent having to blow up decades of carefully thought-out pedagogy because some tech bros spent billions to invent a linguistic trash compactor.
Finally hit full in the face with Chat GPT generated final essays in one of my classes. I thought I had proofed things by requiring only sources from inside my course modules, citations, quotes, etc. but am seeing hallucinated citations (for book titles that don't exist). Unrelievedly depressing.

You don't have to be a lawyer to appreciate the amazing deconstruction that @stevevladeck.bsky.social does with Supreme Court actions. He's at the top of my list currently of people to subscribe to.
Just before 1 a.m., #SCOTUS stepped back into the Alien Enemy Act litigation with a (remarkable) ruling that suggests, among other things, that a majority of the justices is tiring of the Trump administration’s Calvinball.

144. The Supreme Court's Late-Night Alien Enemy Act Intervention
