I don’t want to hear anything from an elected official unless it’s a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.

Journalists in Minneapolis are working nonstop to inform us about the horrific violence being inflicted in upon their city, their state and our country — all while living through it in their communities. @mprnews.org has been invaluable.

It’s a good day to support their work

In the Emily Holmes' original "tetris can help reduce PTSD" study, what was found was that tetris is an activity which busies the part of working memory called the visuospatial sketchpad: imagining the rotation of shapes.

Tetris used to prevent post-traumatic stress symptoms
A single dose psychological intervention, which includes using the computer game Tetris, can prevent the unpleasant, intrusive memories that develop in some people after suffering a traumatic event.

I think they might mistake our courage and our solidarity for a lack of fear, and that if they can make us scared enough we'll make ourselves small. That won't work, because we're all terrified and we're SHOWING UP ANYWAY with love and compassion and joy and care.
it feels a lot like today's murder is in response to the mass protests yesterday, as if to tell us we're powerless, that our solidarity won't protect us.

Another question I came here with was: how effective are the whistles and honking? Does it stop abductions? And the answer is, surprisingly to my cynical self, yes, and often. I have talked to so many people who have successfully interrupted kidnappings.

Hi, for those of you unfamiliar with this sort of weather

-if the power goes out, trying to heat your home with the clay pot + candle method is not a great idea, try personal warmth (ie blankets) and blocking and sealing drafty areas instead if you can
Widespread freezing rain and sleet are expected south of the primary snow axis. Significant and damaging ice accumulations are likely, with the potential for long-duration power outages, tree damage, and dangerous travel conditions.

🧵This is hugely important & touches on a thing lots of folks haven't been faced with:

You
can't
trust
everyone
who
says
they're
on
your
side

It's hard to vet people on the fly but skepticism goes a long way.

In a case like this: Ask for a name & phone number & say you'll pass it along. That's IT.

This story really gets at a fundamental misunderstanding about ICE that I’m seeing outside of Minnesota.

Folks think that ICE could terrorize undocumented immigrants and that it wouldn’t affect the broader community.

But of course it does. The very fabric of social life is unraveling.
I met an absolutely lovely academic who asked whether my department back home is affected by ICE -- a question dramatizing how little info is getting out.

For the record, the small example I chose:

My dept has a carpool to pick up grad students of color who can't safely commute to campus alone.

my Blackest opinion is that the presumption of conflict between "America has a long and deeply rooted history of violence" and "we can and should fight against today's version of that, as did those who came before us" is less a philosophical debate about how to treat the past and more a skill issue

One of the reasons I am so insistent that everyone remember that only 22% of the US population voted for Trump is that the Christian Nationalists want the myth of a mandate in circulation.

We need to reject it. They never had a mandate, and their coalition is shrinking.
The new NYT poll finds Trump 17 points underwater on immigration, and the nonwhite and young voters who went to Trump in 2024 have snapped back to Dems

It's almost as if 2024 might not have represented a seismic cultural realignment on immigration after all, despite 1,000 NYT op eds to the contrary

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

"Research would tell us that most ICE agents entered into these jobs in part because they want approval, and they want to affirm their masculinity in public," said sociologist Nicole Bedera. "An ICE watch works by surrounding these people ... with disapproval."
Observing ICE agents is 'a de-escalation tactic,' sociologist says
The federal government has accused ICE watchers of breaking the law. Sociologist Nicole Bedera said ICE watchers have science behind them. She spoke with MPR News host Clay Masters.

I have been told that this undercover ICE agent tried to get observers to scan a QR code “for his website”. The QR code did not resolve to a link.

DO NOT SCAN UNKNOWN QR CODES FROM STRANGERS.

This is a massive security risk! Bad things can happen to you if you do it!

Stay frosty, friends.
Every day some story breaks me some. Today it’s the guy who approached parents at a school patrol, told them he was with Indivisible, and asked about how the patrol system works. The parents gave vague answers, followed him back to his car — and of course it was ICE.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

wearing a respirator is an antifascist act.

if the most basic “prevent disease” isn’t enough (& it should be, as gvmt leverages austerity & malignant neglect), please seek to understand the rippling effects masking can have in our present moment. it’s not just about you. we keep us safe.
last night, someone on tiktok asked
me how wearing a mask is antifascist, so i answered: unfortunately, even passive, austere eugenics works faster if YOU participate.

so step up: stand out, mask up, and take care take care take care for yourself & others—before those who seek to harm stop you.

bringing this back around as infections surge—protecting yourself and others around you is a courageous act, even when it obscures one’s face. the act of obscuring the face is not inherently shameful, but using non-medical face coverings (ie gaiters) to evade consequences for disappearing people is.

From a good friend in Minneapolis: "Target is allowing ICE to stage in their parking lots, use their restrooms, and abduct people from inside their stores - so if you weren’t boycotting already, now is the time." They were staging in Chicago as well.
