People have forgotten this because of Romney’s modern position in politics but Obama’s re-election campaign went all in on the idea that regular Americans recognize private equity as an unambiguous force for evil and they were dead on
Private equity makes money by extracting resources from already existing companies. Private equity getting into journalism was never going to end well.

I think it was Stross who conceptualized the LLC as a kind of immortal alien intellect with its own logic and goals, often at odds with human civilization, that has successfully conquered the planet in the span of a few hundred years
fiduciary duties to shareholders probably just shouldn't exist but that is never going to happen so you could instead rewrite them to require responsible stewardship of profit over time over immediate chop shop fire sale wealth maximization idk

Nobody asks me for advice but if they did all I have to say is that it’s important to wander out in the cold every once in a while to be alone with your thoughts, otherwise your Perspective meter drops too low and you start to get the bad kind of weird online

It seems like if you are amoral greed monster the best case for you is for future people to say "Yes, he powered his industrial advances with the bones of orphans but he also built a glittering network of libraries and universities, so who is to say if he's bad?"
yes! you might think "oh someone with the towering narcissism to become a billionaire couldn't be an interesting person." but it seems to me that a person with that kind of personality would be obsessed with building Monuments to His Greatness, like a massive library or something.
a thing that’s irritating about this age of gilded grievance is that none of these fucks even do anything memorable. no one will remember these assholes 20 years after they’re dead, they spent their entire lives hoarding wealth and chasing grievance rather than, like, building museums or bying art
