Been thinking about the 2000s a bit as I think they are important to the politics of now, my broad thinking is that the years of plenty encouraged a deliverism that isn't possible now, and the right have done better from the return of ideology to politics.

When you could code silly quizzes on Facebook, it was FULL of "what would you be in medieval times?!" etc.

I made one that nearly always answered "died as a child", "died in childbirth", "lived and died as a servant"

People got SUPER mad with it.

In the early 2010s it was infuriating to see endless screeds on "legitimate concerns" against East Europeans from analysts and scholars who seemed oblivious to how the moment political leaders capitulated to this xenophobia it would just lead to escalating hatemongering against other diasporas

As someone who grew up with and continues to know a lot of fundamentalists: state-funded faith schools are the *only way* to make sure that children growing up in religious extremism are receiving an education that broadly accords with modern life and values.
