In 1994 the @guinnessisacat.bsky.social Widget beat out the internet as invention of the year, and tbh, good call.

The widget never threatened liberal democracy.

And it gives a perfect pour.

Younger people will be shocked to hear this, but way back when I grew up, anytime you saw a movie where some government official stopped someone on the street and demanded to see their identification papers, that was supposed to let you know they were the *bad* guys.

With the tragic assassination of a Minnesota Democratic leader, I’m going to underline this point again.
I know there's a lot going on, but the Secretary of Homeland Security declaring that federal troops are in California and Los Angeles to "liberate" the state and city from its duly-elected leaders really is a fourteen-alarm fire.
It's mind-blowing how little attention this extraordinary statement has received. It's briefly mentioned in a couple news articles, but this MSNBC opinion piece is the only extended discussion of it I've seen: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

A few key points:
- Senator Padilla is the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Safety
- He identified himself as a Senator
- Right before this happened Noem literally said she was there to liberate Los Angeles from its elected leadership
Padilla's office issues new statement on Kristi Noem's goons manhandling him:

"He tried to ask the Secretary a question, and was forcibly removed by federal agents, forced to the ground and handcuffed."

Technically, it was mostly norms that kept Presidents from sending political hacks into the executive agencies to make "factual" determinations that run counter to literal reality.

But also it's a norm that was observed because doing otherwise is so obviously stupid and self-destructive.

This is the *opposite* of what habeas corpus means.
HASSAN: What is habeas corpus?

NOEM: Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country

HASSAN: That's incorrect

Now Stephen Miller is talking constitutional rubbish about a supposed presidential power to suspend habeas corpus to get back at federal courts that displease Trump too much. But only Congress has suspension power — and then only when “public safety requires it” in times of “invasion or rebellion.”
