Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

This is the funniest, stupidest and saddest thing I have read since ... Brexit, probably
There’s literally a Post on X saying that Helen’s father is canonically a white swan so it doesn’t make sense for her to be black.
I see the racists are mad that a black woman has been cast as Helen of Troy.

They're OK with her dad being Zeus and taking the form of a swan to rattle her mum, meaning she was born from an egg though.

I am hearing that RFK Jr.’s minions are going to go after HPV vaccines. I’ve got problems with these people and now you’re going to hear about them, first from a personal perspective and then from a professional one.

It all boils down to this: WE HAVE A SAFE VACCINE THAT PREVENTS CANCER.

I often find myself explaining something that is easy to take for granted, but should be evident: There is no reason why the program of Figuring Out Nature should proceed in time steps that are less than or comparable to the duration of one scientist’s career. (1/n)

Horrifying.

I don't have the words.

I'm not sure any more are needed.
You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

A massive, 26-YEAR-LONG study of MORE THAN 2.4 MILLION people in Sweden found found NO EVIDENCE to support a causal link between acetaminophen (the API in Tylenol) use during pregnancy and increased risk of autism, ADHD, OR intellectual disability in children.

Trump’s desire for Greenland is not for anything. Minerals, money, military control can all be had without its conquest. He just wants to own it. It’s a whim. He feels like it. He thinks it would be cool. That’s it.

Sigh. For the hundredth time, we are not judging his character, we are judging his actions. The RS position would be fine if it was a gentlemen's club, who can have who it damn well pleases. But it positions itself as represnting British science and scientists. Now an embarrassment, to be frank.

Really weaksauce argument from Paul Nurse: "yes he's bad but other scientists have been bad too". Removing this kind of honour is the kind of sanction that actually land with and sting thin-skinned arseholes like Musk

My stepchildren's secondary school still has an account on X. I have just emailed them, saying that it is not appropriate for an educational institution to be part of that ecosystem.

Maybe you could do the same for other schools and institutions.

An AI chatbot does not have PERSONHOOD. It has no agency. It cannot meaningfully apologise. It cannot speak on behalf of another. It cannot speak for itself; it has no self. Stop asking it for quotes for articles. Stop printing its quotes.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
