Feels like the US has spent the last 5+ years on the verge of some kind of secular moral revival that keeps getting channeled into weirdo lifestyle puritanism
Cafes across the U.S. are embracing the low- and no-caffeine lifestyle, with options that are a far cry from dusty tea bags and rewarmed decaf. nyti.ms/3XKlqoj

I grew up in New England rooting for the Patriots (I still feel the pain of Super Bowl XX). Moving away didn’t stop my fandom; that happened when they started winning all the damn time and got smug and boring. Tonight’s loss may have been cleansing enough for me to become a fan again.

If the Republican US attorney for the District of Columbia doesn't recognize the Heller decision then no state is under any obligation to do so either
Pirro: "You bring a gun into the District, you mark my words, you're going to jail. I don't care if you have a license in another district and I don't care if you're a law abiding law owner somewhere else. You bring a gun into this District, count on going to jail. And that makes all the difference"

It was literally preferable in some school districts to imply the Roanoke settlers all starved to death, were murdered, or sucked up by UFO tractor beams than to acknowledge a local tribe went "Dang, dude. You need a hand? Come sit by the fire. BTW I think my sister likes u."

🚨As if DC didn’t already have enough to deal with, today we learned the Senate and House will vote next wk on SJ Res. 102 and HJ Res. 142 to disapprove a bill to decouple provisions of DC’s tax code from the feds.

This would blow a $820 MILLION hole through the financial plan!

the thing that jumps out across multiple agencies is how they think the *mechanics* of *writing regulations* is the difficult task to be solved and that the content of the regulation is easy. it's almost as wrong as you can possibly be

There are a lot of men out there who do not see any of the logistics happening around them and they're like "wait, where the fuck did these hand warmers come from?"

Look at every kid wearing mittens, and that's your answer. From the people who have been silently keeping hands warm for centuries.

Think about how although Pretti was a gunowner, when he saw someone being attacked his first response wasn't to use the gun but to help them up and ask them if they're ok.

It wasn't even on his mind that a gun would be useful.

Compare that to the paranoia of rightwing gun culture.

My church announced yesterday that there would be no Sunday services due to the predicted storm. It’s a decision they made for the safety of staff and congregation, and I don’t fault them for it…

But at this moment I’m in desperate need to be with the community that shares my values and sorrow.

The Republican position now appears to be that you have a constitutional right to openly carry a gun in public, unless you do so while expressing a view that the government dislikes, in which case the secret police can shoot you to death on the spot.
Minneapolis police chief Brian O'Hara says that the victim was a 37-year-old white man and US citizen with no criminal record and that he was a legally permitted gun owner.

The central question of the last decade+ in America is if the police can kill you if they feel afraid, and it was my understanding that you sign up for the job knowing there’s going to be danger and you’re paid to be better than “I shot him because I was scared”

Cruelty is anhedonic. It rarely delivers the euphoria promised because, in the abstract, what feels righteous and joyful inevitably reveals itself to be sordid and small. Then it's "No not like that". "No not enough". "No the real battle, the forever war to make this feel good starts now". Forever.
Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isn’t enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.

I think abusing your position at a think tank to fix the outcome of a gambling contract on a real life war by altering a map is immoral, but tbh probably less immoral than genuinely gambling on what's going to happen in a real life war is?

My sole employer to have followed federal wage and hour regulations was a huge law firm that represented corporations who had engaged in nefarious behaviors. The nonprofits didn’t even understand that they weren’t supposed to ask the intern to stay til 9 pm.
something I think is underdiscussed about employment/capitalism discourse is that abusive/bad labor/management practices are probably more common in nonprofits and trendy organizations that people on the left are likely to work for than big boring office companies
