I loved this. And I want to note the whole “there were no autistic people before …” discourse has an answer here: just the people were sent away in the incarceration (yes “care homes” like this), and if they fled, they were just abandoned by society, usually to die.

The blatant selling of pardons is perhaps the clearest instance of criminal conduct authorized by SCOTUS. Pardons are a quintessential "official act." So, even when Trump takes a bribe to issue one, he is presumably above the criminal law.

Santa Claus has arrived by sleigh in a Union army camp to distribute gifts. This was the moment that Nast conceived and introduced our modern image of Santa Claus. Combining European traditions of St. Nicholas with folk images of elves from his native Germany, he created the jolly gift-giver now associated with Christmas that here offers cheer to soldiers far from home. He distributes boxes of necessities such as warm socks, copies of Harper's Weekly, and entertains the crowd with a jumping jack dangling from a noose, its chest lettered "Jeff" in reference to the Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In the background, soldiers chase an escaped hog, roast meat on a spit and play fairground games such as climbing a greased pole. This image on the title page of the journal was supported by a two-page spread within the journal that shows Santa visiting sleeping children in New York (see 33.35.26 and 29.88.4(8)).

Two theses on Christmas. 1. "You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen, but do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?" Why would you assume I know the more obscure reindeer but then check to verify that I know the most famous one of all? "Oh sure you know Claudia Jones, Pauli Murray, Charlene Mitchell and Ben Chavis. Very impressive, I'm sure. But riddle me this! Do you recall Martin Luther King? The most famous civil rights icon of all?" Big PhD energy. 2. Scrooge is a lousy anti-capitalist villain, because he's a bad employer, so capitalists who see themselves as good employers can distance themselves from him, and avoid a structural takeaway. A stronger anti-capitalist fable would concern a *good* employer, who, for fear of losing his business, or under immense pressure from investors to make a windfall profit, makes a hard decision to screw over his employees at Christmastime.
