In libraries, we call this vocational awe. The idea that if you are invested in your calling, you should accept low wages/inhumane conditions is a nasty little trick of capitalism.

The "Starving artist" trope was started by ppl who didn't wanna pay artists (writers, painters, musicians, etc) & wanted it to seem a good thing. Artists suffering for art, starving artists, doing it for love only/shunning money - All myth turned folklore as reason to NOT FUCKING PAY US OUR DUE.

The weird Discourse that seeks to shame anyone who isn't actively cranked up to 11 on all of these horrors, all the time, to the exclusion of all else, is so unhelpful to all of us who are trying to do something about the horrors, I wonder how much of it is driven by right wing trolls.
