It begs the question of the actual utility of the NYPD when they couldn’t protect a CEO from being murdered in midtown (and couldn’t catch the murderer in one of the most surveilled places in the country) and they couldn’t bother to save a much poorer woman from being burned alive on the subway.
As an NYC resident, you pay $12B a year for a police force that is not good at what you want them to be good at: solving and preventing murder, theft, and sexual assault.
For example, the most stolen items in NYC are smartphones and bikes. NYPD doesn't even recognize the most recommended bike lock🤡

I don't like it when people have things stolen from them. Being robbed sucks. But a person having a bike stolen from them in NYC, provides an education that starts undoing decades of watching "Law and Order" copaganda trash.

The fact that civilian leadership understands it can’t rein in the police without having their families physically threatened really is a democratic crisis.
The last time nyc had a mayor who tried to mildly reign in police violence they doxxed his daughter so
A lot of blue mayors and governors know the "don't give an order you don't expect to be obeyed" leadership maxim but interpret it as "I guess I can't order the cops to do anything" rather than as a crisis of insubordination.
