Seems like a good time to note that many nonfiction publishers do not fact check, or do so only very superficially, and authors who want their work fact checked need to pay for it. This is bad in general but especially when editors are acquiring ‘eye-opening books’ that are just reactionary lies.

In every Boomer's kitchen is either a can opener that no longer works or a needlessly elaborate can opener that is "more convenient" but incredibly opaque to understand. There will be no other can opener.

Wildlife heroes: Harsh Maine winters cause many wild creatures to die of starvation. For 4 decades, Richard and Randy McMahon--father and son--have put out food for deer from Dec-Apr. Feeding troughs filled with oats, apples, and acorns feed 200-250 deer each winter. Each deer eats 2-5 lb food/day.

Im not saying Nicki Minaj has the same job as bari Weiss

What i will say tho?

Black folks successfully bullied Minaj into deleting her IG in 48 hours

And Weiss still has a job

Some people understand the assignment and some people refuse to acknowledge the assignment
One of things thats insidious about whiteness as a cultural concept in America is how it relies on pageantry and respectability

Bc lmao if bari Weiss was black this levle of politeness would not exist and the "you acting like a hoe rn eric" gif would be trending

It’s wild so many people are willing to go to bat for prisons as a reserve for rural jobs when universities are better in every aspect for such a role.
"Even after accounting for the upfront costs and delayed benefits, enrolling marginal applicants to public universities generates substantial net returns for society, the marginal students themselves, and the government budget."

Public Universities FTW!

An interesting feature of this is that Weiss seems to think the primary goal is "winning back" Americans who don't trust the news, which extends beyond truth-telling into a political project. Furthermore we know she wants to "win back" a very specific demographic: right-wingers.
New Bari Weiss & CBS leadership note to staff—

“…Americans say they do not trust the press…To win back their trust, we have to work hard.”

“Sometimes it means telling unexpected stories…sometimes it means holding a piece about an important subject to make sure it is comprehensive and fair.”

I often think about how when Trump said ‘grab em by the pussy’ on camera they fired a guy & sent him to The Netherrealm just for *hearing* him say it but everyone just still allowed him to Run

That’s why I have never believed that the Epstein Files would be his smoking gun

There isn’t one anymore
Just a reminder that Trump has, on camera, bragged about walking in on Miss Teen USA contestants changing and explained his 17-year-old daughter asked him not to “date” girls younger than her.

I’m not sure what’s true in the Epstein Files, but when you recall those facts it all seems plausible

"I shot a bunch of people because they have the same religion as a nation state in a different hemisphere doing terrible things" feels like the dictionary definition of bigotry, and in this case it's pretty clear what the bigotry is
When you’ve gone to this place, it’s time to just admit your only interest in antisemitism is claiming it doesn’t exist

So I am going to say something about romance as a genre.

A lot of people think that romance is ignorable because <insert thing they think about romance> and romance authors don't count because <insert thing they think about romance>.

This thread is not about whether you have to like romance.

Nearly of the US's garlic comes from China. Another quarter of it from Spain.

At least it did before the trade war.

It's possible some of the garlic being sold rn is the tail end of garlic that was shipped in before the tariffs started.

A disturbing update to this story: Despite the fact that he was about to be released from a US prison after completing a sentence here, when Kelvin Membreño was deported to El Salvador he was sent to CECOT prison and remains there. The family has not heard from him since.
NEW — Kelvin Membreño will be deported to El Salvador by ICE tomorrow. He’s the birth father of three US citizen daughters and has become an important part of their lives.

Here their adoptive mother makes a last ditch plea to let him stay in the same country as the girls. A gutting guest essay:
A mother's urgent plea to stop ICE from deporting her daughters’ birth father tomorrow
He served his time in the US. He deserves to heal here, too.
