Bari Weiss’ two accomplishments so far are hosting an interview that she desperately wanted people to watch (but they didn’t) and trying to spike a news story that she desperately wanted nobody to watch (but they did)

unless the AI is sending out surveys to real people & collating results (potentially a task machine learning could help with!) it is MAKING THINGS UP.

this question: "How do we know when a model is genuinely representing a population, rather than producing a fluent stereotype?"

I'm very tolerant of bad aesthetics - I actually frequently LOVE bad art when it comes from real human beings! But when it's churned out by a fucking machine? It has zero meaning and zero value and actually degrades the reputation and message of the person throwing it at us.

I’m reminded of watching two old ladies ask a teenage goth for directions and she politely told them and when she was out of earshot one lady said “You know where you are with a goth”
Things are Terrible, but this isn't.

absolutely true. to me some of the most interesting parts of a trip somewhere is to capture the structures that most people overlook. even in galleries and museums the infrastructure above the lights/sight lines or around a corner from the main gallery space can be as fascinating as the exhibition.
So this is what I’m talking about when I tell artists to go outside, I know I’m a cunt but I’m legit telling a lot of you that inspiration is outside as well. Go to a construction site if you’re a mech/robot artist and just take pictures of everything.

Specifying that they're being forced to "waste resources" protecting incumbents is INCREDIBLY telling re: how stuck they are in their thinking: a primary that produces a new, exciting, motivating candidate is worth WAY MORE than anything your campaign funds can do for your "check-the-box" incumbent!

Really funny how the "vote blue no matter who" Dems wouldn't support their own just a couple of months ago are now clutching their pearls over how they're being attacked by "their own" now.

Guess the lack of self-awareness from the guys they've been buddying up with lately has begun to rub off.

And

I hate to say it

But if you work in the ART DEPARTMENT and you need a death machine stuffed with your colleagues’ work to give you ideas

Quit.

Trans youth healthcare is based in decades of research and supported by every major medical organization in the US. Under RFK Jr, a handpicked panel produced a dodgy report claiming otherwise.

It's a clear example of Kennedy's war on science. So why aren't news organizations treating it that way?

aside, but an important one: the @huffpost.com calling this move "dystopian" rather than "fascist"/"illegal"/"authoritarian" contributes to the pervasive and pernicious attitude that this is so shocking and unlikely that it isn't really happening, something to observe with horror rather than resist.

Little girl in a shop: Mum?
Her mum: Yes?
Girl: There’s an old woman who talks but with no sound, and has a sad face. She tries to tell you things but you can’t see.
Mum: Where?
Girl (points at floor): Always there.
Mum: Well darling, that’s terrifying. Let’s go eat dinner.

“prompt writer isn’t an artistic medium” is a fantastic read and I hope it makes them cry
Met a 40yo gallery-ist at a party in SF. We spent most of the party talking abt the art world, but mostly what she talked abt was how most of her life now is telling AI “artists” that they are not artists, she won’t sell their “work” in her gallery, & that “prompt writer” isn’t an artistic medium.

Oh wow this is a new low, arguably more insidious and damaging to the integrity of human knowledge than creating fake sources (which at least can be exposed). Reading & judging the quality of the cited support for your claims is the difference between trustworthy research and cherry-picked bullshit
It is not "attribution and sourcing" to generate post-hoc citations that have not been read and did not inform the student's writing. Those should be regarded as fraudulent: artifacts testifying to human actions and thought that did not occur.
