"Reproductive freedom should be sacrosanct" and "we should tax women who refuse to breed" are not in fact mutually compatible statements.
opinionhaver.bsky.social
My most controversial take on this is probably that while I think reproductive freedom should be sacrosanct, I don’t really have any problem with additional taxes on (high income) childless people. Someone gotta pay into the pensions!

'There, There' was great, but his follow-up, 'Wandering Stars', was event better—beautiful and gutting and took my breath away more than once. If you missed it, I strongly recommend reading. Really excited to see what he does next.

I love this story with my entire heart and soul. www.bbc.com/news/article...
US scientist Dr Fred Ramsdell was on the last day of a three-week hike with his wife Laura O'Neill and their two dogs, deep in Montana's grizzly bear country, when Ms O'Neill suddenly started screaming.

But it was not a predator that had disturbed the quiet of their off-grid holiday: it was a flurry of text messages bearing the news that Dr Ramsdell had won the Nobel Prize for medicine.

Dr Ramsdell, whose phone had been on airplane mode when the Nobel committee tried to call him, told the BBC's Newshour Programme that his first response when his wife said, "You've won the Nobel prize" was: "I did not."

As I said at the time a "consumer" used to be called a reader, a viewer,a listener. We created and reinforced a value hierarchy, and now a bunch of people who could be watching their favorite films are pushing us video of the Teletubbies meeting the Beatles or whatever.

This bit specifically is so wrongheaded.

The effect is the opposite - it makes ordinary minds significantly wronger.

And also the narrative of inevitability sucks! There are a million things ppl can do to actively resist! What a weird false dichotomy

It's a great question. AI has accelerated our abilities like that drug from the movie. Limitless. It's writing our papers, analyzing our bloodwork, and planning our weddings. Now your average Keith has the critical thinking abilities of a supercomputer running at ten-trillion teraclops per floppyshart.
It enables ordinary minds to have extraordinary abilities.
And there's no stopping that. I don't have some clever call to action for you like,
"Let's ban AI.”

I enjoyed good chunks of that comic but it totally lost me when he semi sincerely presented non-art applications as relatively fine

Research, writing, analysis, invention - all these things are skills that require effort. And the fakery is already causing massive amounts of harm.

Folks, please, never ever use generative AI to render charts.......
Okay, now that I've insulted half the internet, let's reel it in and talk about how AI art can be useful.
I believe it can be a powerful tool for dealing with the minutiae of drawing the parts of it that feel

Every artist has their own minutiae. For me, it's backgrounds. Most of my comics don't have them, which is why I often draw pale blobs floating in space.

End of a thread. Gonna lose it with these non-specific calls to action.

Blue state governors and legislators can create their own militias / guards, they can pay people to document ICE, they can work with local governments to shut off water, electricity and transport for ICE facilities.
