I want to reiterate, because it may have gotten lost in this thread, but ice is now wearing plain clothes, carrying whistles and blowing them at observers in an effort to intentionally confuse people on the ground. That alone is a major escalation and shift in tactics which should be noted.

Sometimes. There’s this idea of being a “fool for God,” of God laying “the worldly wise” low and raising up ordinary believers to accomplish his will/great things. There’s a major strain of anti-intellectualism even if many would not directly frame it as something akin to “ignorance = holiness”

Anti-intellectualism is a deep vein in US history. Ignorance, has also been associated w/"honesty," "common sense," & "authenticity," qualities completely unrelated to it.

An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Turning Point USA made a literal watch list of professors, primarily women, queer folks and people of color, and made us targets of political violence. I’ve received hate mail and harassment and death threats off and on for nearly a decade in part due to that man’s organization so 🤷🏽♀️
