I’m crying at Jeff Flake’s pose- why is he trying to serve lol????
Jeff Flake, Joe Manchin and Tina Smith all decided to leave the Senate during the Trump era. On “The Interview,” the current and former lawmakers open up about why they think the Senate is broken and what it would take to fix it. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/13/m...

Tbf ppl are mentioning he’s Muslim bc several conservatives were trying to incite Islamophobia due to the antisemitic terrorist attacks

It’s not to say “see, Muslims can care about Jews” but rather “don’t demonize a religious group based actions of isolated individuals”

Abolish ICE, abolish CBP (who is so bad ICE agents complain about CBP’s abuse of power) and then get rid of DHS
one thing that i don't think people remark enough on is Bovino is not a political appointee
Bovino on Abrego Garcia: "When he becomes deportable, he is going to get deported. And he needs to be deported now."
December 14, 2025 at 5:55 PM
Begging ppl to remember abolish DHS (& subagencies of ICE and CBP) has been a movement since its inception only 22 years ago bc ppl (often libertarians) easily saw how it was going to be used to trample civil liberties in name of “security”

From 2015:

I had to learn a bit about Illinois' AWB when it passed to stay in compliance. I did what I needed to do and then forgot about it.

I now need to learn more about it because I'm trying to figure out if I can buy a replacement part and all I can say is: this thing has no business in a free society.
December 14, 2025 at 4:13 AM
Yes but also Garcia’s treatment and Trump’s violation of civil liberties wrt deporting ppl to gulags was very unpopular- most unpopular thing he has done on immigration w/ 61 percent disapproving!
December 14, 2025 at 2:24 AM
Underrated with ppl like Yglesias and Silver is how COVID just completely broke them and that’s important to point out bc COVID broke a lot of ppl, and our society’s refusal to confront that has led to everything being a dumpster fire
MattY is funny because a few years ago he was writing about how immigration is great and now his hobbyhorse is saying that absolutely we cannot do that politically. It’s like if in a couple years 90% of Ezra Klein opinion columns end up being about how we shouldn’t take on the environmental lobby

Ironic bc Heather Cox Richardson doesn’t identify as a Democrat but a “Lincoln-era” Republican lol
what the fuck are you talking about man
December 14, 2025 at 12:33 AM
My hot take is that Kamala goes for 2028, we likely are getting a 2020 primary redux w/ her as Biden

Esp if she goes with a “both parties failed America and institutions are broken”angle
December 13, 2025 at 10:13 PM
Affective polarization is good bc that’s how we get Bill Kristol going from supporting the security state and DHS creator to supporting abolishing ICE
Hahahahaha it's sincere!!

It's lame how US developers will build discrete new neighborhoods like this without a little town center. I think to most people, a little hub with a coffee shop, barber shop, post office, and/or convenience store would be a real amenity.

Can’t speak for the rest of the Anglosphere but for the US, it’s the institutions birthed from Constitution, deliberately designed to limit radical change
idk if this has been specifically an american or generationsl thing but the mass inclination toward temporary reprieve over confronting problems head on is slowly killing us
Wtf. I give Biden some love, here.

His presidency was a temporary reprieve from the disgraceful track America has decided to take. Our economy was the envy of the world and now it’s a laughingstock car crash.

They will find the funds after this mad, corrupt administration has withered away.

apart from the sheer inconceivable horror of the El Fasher massacre and its attendant horrors itself, the thing I'm feeling depressed about is that it probably won't matter.

these were people already on the utmost margins of the global system, who the world has already decided it doesn't care about
60,000 is the *low end* estimate.
So, El Fasher looks like one of the worst single event atrocities to happen this century so far, but the evidence has come in such a trickle it seems to only now be getting verified

It’s always so revealing which leftists agree with Abundance/are broadly supportive (Zohran, Saikat of New Consensus, AOC) and which ones are not

Time and time again: it’s the ones who are actually thoughtful and interested in making govt work for ppl vs ppl who pontificate and podcast lol
the ideas are like 50 percent okay but it could not more obviously be a grasstops donor led project
abundance was brought up in this podcast in terms of “is this what No Kings libs are talking about versus ???” and the cofounder of Indivisible just straight up says, in polite terms, that nobody on the ground gives a fuck about it and, if anything, see it as a pointless distraction lol

this is a general warrant and it's specifically the kind of warrant the framers passed the 4th amendment to outlaw
WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

It was genuinely an honor to meet Mr. Chavarria at Tuesday's hearing. His story is incredible; grew up in a refugee camp in Honduras, graduated as a valedictorian at 15, got scholarships in the US, met his husband here, became a US citizen, and is now a school superintendent in Vermont.
Chavarria, a U.S. citizen, was held at the airport "for more than four hours and released only after he finally agreed to let the agents search his smartphone, tablet, and laptop computer. The agents...informed him that he had no Fourth Amendment right to resist." @pacificlegal.bsky.social is suing.
CBP agents held this U.S. citizen for hours until he agreed to let them search his electronic devices
A federal lawsuit argues that perusing travelers' personal data without a warrant or probable cause violates the Fourth Amendment.

I’ve said before that the 2028 dem platform will fit in one word: “revenge”.
cannot stress enough how the leading quality i want in 2028 dem primary fronteunnwr is “vengeful”
One under-appreciated part of this: note the bit below about “and their dependents.”

Under the Trump admin’s new policy, dependent children of visa applicants are not allowed to have their social media set to private during the entire visa process. They MUST make their social media public.

I am dead serious when I say that if one of the most vulnerable people in the country can do this with the right allies, no fight in American politics is completely hopeless.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is free. every bit of cruelty, boasting, slander, and persecution was for absolutely fucking nothing.

fwiw: The autistic people and the families of autistic people I spoke were still angry/hurt/fearful several weeks after that Trump/RFK, Jr., press conference.

That was a blip on the news cycle for a lot of people. Not for people who were directly affected by Trump/RFK's verbiage and policies.
Lisa Murkowski gets snippy when I ask her about Trump using the "R-word"

"I'm not going to comment on that. There's so much important stuff going on."

Me: It's a slur

Murk: Absolutely it's an awful slur. It's an awful slur for people with disabilities, and he just shouldn't be doing it."

Focus on corruption but won’t vote to impeach Trump

Side note: Props to Al Green who repeatedly pushing to impeach this motherfucker since 2017!
Significant statement from Jeffries and House Democratic leaders saying they will vote “present” on the motion to table Al Green’s resolution to impeach President Trump. They say they’re “laser-focused on fighting to lower the high cost of living” plus on health care and corruption.

Ngl, it wasn’t even 100% class war; two of the biggest flashpoints in 2012 was when Obama was infamously pressured by activists to go left on immigration (DACA/DAPA); same w/ gay marriage!!

And both times, voters rewarded him for it which is why Obama moved further left by the end of the 2nd term!
It’s funny/weird that the legacy of Obama 2012 is perceived appeals to the mythical center when that race was basically 100% class war, especially after Romney became the nominee (speaking as someone who was there)
It's inconvenient for people interested in Dem factional fights, or Obama 2012 veterans trying to get consulting work. But we have known since several days after the election that Trump gained fewer votes from 2020-2024 in swing states that were exposed to campaign messages than in other states. /1
