Eh, I think it is different? I work with teens and I have elementary-aged children. Almost none of them know the origin/what it means. Meme culture is different from what it was, especially because teens and adults and children have connections to each other via social media that don't mix.
the 6-7 phenomenon is in no way different from any other catchphrase that kids have yelled out at any point in the last hundred years, there's no daylight between that and when i was in high school, the year straight where every guy kept yelling "i'm rick james bitch"
