Weird and almost universal revisionism today. Even at the time, it was pretty clear that Mandelson wasn't appointed *despite* his dodgy links but *because* of them. Trump's Washington is a dirty swamp. Mandelson was deemed a man able to swim in it. This wasn't a secret. Everybody said it out loud.

As the World Snooker Championship draws to a close I thought I might recreate a thread I enjoyed putting together over on Twitter: snooker players as composers.

One lesson from the Epstein–Mandelson affair is that we need to stop routinely rehabilitating political careers after serious scandals.

When politicians knowingly engage in grave ethical wrongdoing, that should permanently end their political careers. Being "talented" should not override that.

I cannot wait for the day when I no longer have to hear from, or about, Elon Musk. when I no longer have to see his stupid face, or screenshots of him doing epic clapbacks on his Nazi paedo app. I'll read exactly one article about his demise from ketamine-induced hyper diarrhoea, and that'll be it

Lies about stand up:

- It’s about honesty
- It’s the only form of comedy
- It’s about jokes
- It’s dangerous
- Nothing is off limits
- If you have rules and limits, you’d have to ban all comedy

No art form attracts more obfuscatory bullshit from its practitioners (except maybe fine art.)

I don't exaggerate when I say that Andrew Wakefield should be tried for mass murder. We'll never know how many people have died or will die as a direct result of his fraudulent study.
This is the large domino, with the small domino being some random quack in the UK in 1998 trying to undermine the existing MMR vaccine so his business partner can swoop in with his own. Instead he lost his work credentials and now kids are dying needlessly all over the world, so great job everyone.
Austria loses its WHO status as measles-free, too, together with Armenia, Azerbaijan Uzbekistan and Spain. This comes as no surprise, considering the rise in numbers in recent years and the decline in MMR vaccine coverage

It is genuinely astounding how Reform, Labour and the Tories have decided to fight tooth-and-nail for the votes of the same 30-35 percent of the electorate and completely ignore everyone else.
Badenoch's strategic genius on full display here, telling centrist voters to fuck off, including in the 60+ seats the party lost to the Lib Dems, so she can focus on competing with an extreme right party ahead of her in the polls.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Great joke.
Old joke truer then ever

A large russian patrol is marching through the snowy woods near the border when they hear a voice shouting from behind a nearby snowbank:
"One Finnish soldier is better than ten russians!"
Exercise commanders had to ask 🇫🇮 reservists, the most formidable Arctic warriors, who were playing the role of invaders in the war games, to go easy on the Americans. “The Finns had to be told to stop beating the Americans as it was embarrassing and demoralising for them,” a mil source said.”

It's also all a bit...'Franz Ferdinand's assassination an embarrassment for the 'Visit Sarajevo' tourism campaign', it is certainly *true* but it is missing the point.
also, side note, but why are these deranged outbursts by a deranged racist & misogynist ‘embarrassing’ for Starmer, who’s trying to prop up a security alliance in the face of madness, and not ‘embarrassing’ for the journalists working on these stories who’ve done so much to sanewash Trump?

Right - here goes.

I've been thinking and reading quite a lot about Trump and the nature of the threat his regime poses, and how the UK and Europe can respond. Not sure I have any answers, but there are a number of dead ends to avoid. 🧵 1/14
Good piece.

Now thinking about what a stronger European response should look like, beyond ‘being more forceful in speaking truth to power’.

Trust in Trump has (surely) long since gone. How to navigate him is a much harder question.
