On this day in 2013, Harold Crowchild, also known as Iron Shield, died.
Born in 1915, he served in the Second World War and earned several medals for his service. Upon his death, he was the last surviving Tsuu T'ina veteran of the war.

This novel about year 600 of the Third Reich, written in 1937 (before Austria was annexed! Before Kristallnacht! Before WWII started!)

is a brilliant, terrifying study on masculinity & fascism

& it reminded me of the Trump administration when I read it in December, 2023.

All the more so, now.

Congratulations to all the bankers, hedge-fund managers, private-equity honchos, tech titans, corporate executives and op-ed writers for backing the man who will do more to undermine the system that made them insanely wealthy than any other presidential candidate in their lifetimes.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the US central bank had been served grand jury subpoenas from the Justice Department threatening a criminal indictment, a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s attacks on the Fed.

I have been sticking little pictures from my phone into my bullet journal. Sometimes the view out my office window. Sometimes just a nice memory.

And today I printed out a photo from an amusing news event and gave it to a friend just because she was there and it was whimsical

a rather significant portion of the founding was based on “no guys like Donald Trump in particular”

they really specifically wanted to avoid this type of know-nothing demagogue
people will say the framers never could have predicted this, but that's not true at all, they absolutely *did* expect someone like trump, they thought congress would *stop* him, and they thought they made that clear

Not this year.

In good conscience, I cannot.

I look forwards to better times…

Thank you for asking! Been complaining about this for a while, mostly into the void. My porn from 10+ years ago was used to create a deepfake involving someone else’s face, and I’ve never seen anyone ask whether that might be traumatic for the person whose body was used without consent too. IT IS!

The animating force at the heart of US conservatism currently is incandescent rage at the mere idea of women's autonomy and independence. An image of a smiling woman who looks insufficiently deferential for their tastes riles them up enough to tear up the social contract.
this is all it’s really about for them. Not domestic policy, not “economic anxiety”, just an endless desire to punish stand-ins for the Mommy who forced them take a bath, even if it tanks their own quality of life.

Maybe 20 armed DHS goons descended on the Uptown McDonald’s to abduct one poor woman, causing absolute chaos as the entire neighborhood rushed in to shout and throw snowballs. Why are we doing this, it’s insane

I genuinely believe the thing that pisses off these goons the most is when people aren’t scared of them. Someone smiling in defiance is more infuriating to them than anything at this point.

the last year has been one long exercise in finding out who has principles and who is a spineless worm fit only to wriggle in the dirt.
we have been way too tolerant of cowards: we should be demanding that far more people in power who claim to be against the murderous evil of MAGA meet the standard currently being demonstrated by Jerome Fucking Powell
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."

I love the way Powell, multiple times over the past months, did not crawl into the gutter with the orange scumbag. Instead, he responds with a very calm, very confident statement that relies on facts.

Don't doubt that Jay Powell is ready to lob back whatever grenades are thrown his way.

I've never seen a central bank release an evening video so directly taking on a head of state. In this case, the medium is the message: Powell is taking his case to the people.
