it was nice when i job hopped twice in a year and increased my salary by 50%. eggs went up in price by like $.50/carton though so now we cant ever have that again
NEW from me:

Job growth has been functionally zero over the last five months, as the US sinks from a “low hire, low fire” labor market to a “no hire” one.

That slowdown is hitting young & low income workers the hardest 🧵

It is impossible to overstate the degree to which the entire national political media's coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign, especially once Harris won the nomination, was deeply, fundamentally, shamefully unserious about the stakes & the candidates.
I can still recall all the tut-tutting from the media when Harris made this argument.
Kamala Harris at her closing campaign rally:

"Donald Trump intends to use the United States Military against American citizens who simply disagree with him."

it was very obvious to me from the early terf wars that there was a kind of bigotry black hole: the transphobes all became racists. the racists were all misogynists. the misogynists were all authoritarians. much of my work since then has been devoted to trying to understand why.
you know how if you try and make LLMs more racist, they also end up more sexist and pro-genocide? this is the human example of that. evil isn't a single thing, if you start down one path you keep ending up at the same destination.

Biden gave one speech about the threat of democratic backsliding to which the press response was "did you see how sinister the background lighting was"
I don't know how to describe it, but there's this profound brokenness in the American body politic where nobody can take the implications of anything seriously. People keep saying things that should be existential threats to the political system, and then everyone just keeps going on as normal.

it is the policy of this government to treat democratic-led states as conquered territories and the people therein as something like hostiles or even enemy combatants

I think there's two basic dynamics underpinning shitty mob behavior online, and the Sky Marchini/Will Stancil stuff is an unfortunate example of each. The first is a feeding frenzy - when a post is over-interpreted or just straightforwardly misinterpreted, and especially when it escapes context.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

this is the most incredible interview i’ve ever read. the aei guy tries so hard to get sliwa to trash mamdani and he simply won’t. he also brings up flaco (rip) unprompted.

This is the impact of networked incitement. And now every other “citizen journalist” wannabe Nick Shirley is on the ground in Washington, Ohio, and I assume elsewhere trying to break/make the next viral story. There’s potential for this to spin further out of control, hoping it doesn’t

You see this all the time on Teen Mom/Unexpected, the teen dads talk big about how they'll step up bc that's how they've been raised and that's the cultural script, but then they don't do anything, bc the expectation is simply that they talk big
Men doing this whole “I will vanquish continents for my children” LARP is so goofy in the context of household surveys. It’s nice you’ll kill millions for your daughter, maybe we can start at doing a load of laundry for your wife who does the vast majority of household labor?

the single biggest disconnect in American politics is between who Republicans think Trump is and who he actually is
The most interesting thing about Trump, contra Kat Rosenfeld, is that he shows no loyalty to anyone and keeps selling out everyone he steps on to get where he wants and whenever one of his stepping stones like MTG get the temerity to think they have a reciprocal relationship they're all surprised!

By our tracking (not yet updated for holiday strikes), it is the peak of the campaign and may surpass the peak of strikes in Pakistan.
