The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

Writing a book or movie is not a herculean undertaking. It's chipping away just a little bit at a time. 500 words here, 1000 words there, 300 after that. It's moving bit by bit scene by scene. You can prep almost every word in advance or just sit down and start typing. It's just putting in the time.

Getting words on the page is easy. You sit down, you type. Bam! Words.

It's finding the RIGHT words that can be hard. That's the trick of it. The secret is that sometimes the right words don't appear until after you write the wrong ones. So write the wrong ones. You'll find the right ones in there.

As a therapist this is pretty much all I do.
i would be a great therapist i'd just be telling people "it is what it is" and "you gotta lock in" and "yeah it do be like that" and all my patients would become so normal

My favorite thing about Elon Musk is that he proves money can't buy happiness. Or class, intelligence, friendship, love, purpose, grace, a sense of humor, a clue, taste, likability, expertise, empathy, enlightenment, compassion, respect, morals or whatever is the opposite of profound creepiness

I'm the guy who designed the 'Please Wait' buttons at pedestrian crossings, and let me tell you – angrily pressing the button over and over again *does* make the lights change faster. I designed it that way on purpose to reward impatient geniuses.

wealth can buy you the presidency and the most global influence ever witnessed in history but it’s clear that wealth, no matter how much you accumulate, cannot ever make you funny

This is a novella.

But if you read it you’ll understand everything you need to know about what Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg are doing right now. I’m a biographer of the first two men, and have chronicled here exactly how and why the third is following their lead.

Again—a long read.
The War Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg Are Fighting Isn’t the One You Think It Is
A lonely extremist of dogmatic antisocial views has falsely sold himself for decades as a principled capitalist. His biographer explains why Musk’s mask came off—and why Zuckerberg is following suit.

Inside one box, you put the Ship of Theseus.
Inside the other, the Trolley Problem.
Then you quantize the contents of each to be in a super-position.
Give the boxes to two groups of Prisoners and then give them the following Dilemma : Whichever box has a living cat in it, the other Prisoners die

I would kill to have the same unbridled enthusiasm for anything that my wife does for our new window cleaning appliance.

I'm not saying my wife is melodramatic, but I accidentally poured her the wrong type of tea this evening and she responded by singing Close Every Door from Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

just saw an “we overstocked! help us!” sale where it was 10% off. insulting. that’s an email signup / first order discount. if we’re going to play make-believe about an existential inventory crisis, it’s gonna cost you at least 25%. and that’s me being generous
