Younger ppl probably don’t remember 08 as well, but I was still a corporate lawyer and we all thought major jail time was coming for a lot of folks. I mean, they were doing fraud; everyone knew. The rating agencies (moodys etc) lied their asses off. And nothing happened!

IMO Trump should make our assessments of GWB and Reagan much worse, not better. Trump’s militarism shouldn’t make the gwot seem more rational by comparison, it should look much worse from today’s vantage. Idk why so many get this backwards.

It’s really atrocious how they threw the full force of the federal government at this one guy because he embarrassed them by being innocent of everything except trying to live his life.

Only one of many, unfortunately. But he got publicity so he had to be destroyed.
Remarkable how brutal the ruling against Trump on Abrego Garcia truly is: It details flagrant and malicious abuses of power all throughout. Trump and Stephen Miller were testing their ability to spread lawless state terror. But the court held the line. 1/

Fiasco for Trump as Judge Issues Harsh Rebuke in Abrego Garcia Case
Judge Paula Xinis’s ruling temporarily freed Kilmar Abrego Garcia from custody. It also savagely indicted Trump’s lawless handling of this whole affair from start to finish.

AI is a climate issue. AI is a climate crisis.
A few important points here

- Generative AI supercharged data centre growth: lobbyist and substacker lines pretending like this is just streaming are false

- Even when you consider much of the projected growth is speculative, the *likely* projects are still MASSIVE

This is bigger than "AI companies are buying all the RAM."

This is "AI companies are ruining the larger market because they're bribing RAM manufacturers and no regulators anywhere in the entire world are moving to stop them."

Capitalism is incompatible with society.

"writing code to solve a problem" used to have "understanding the problem" as a prerequisite. but vibecoding allows solution-shaped objects to be produced without any of the hard-won understanding. beware of solution-shaped objects.

Learning with AI falls short compared to old-fashioned web search
Doing the mental work of connecting the dots across multiple web queries appears to help people understand the material better compared to an AI summary.

so I suggest everyone license their software as funny as possible
finally a normal software license that definitely holds up really well

One of the defining feelings in American life, for decades now, is elites doing plainly criminal shit and nothing at all happening as a result. It is deranging in a way that virtually nothing else is. Media fixates on perceived street lawlessness but shit like this matters much more in my opinion.

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

have to admit that I don’t understand the absolute hysteria about Zohran Mamdani from the right. it’s not like we have no precedent for left-wing mayors in America. that NYC somehow feels the need to keep electing cranks instead of normie progressives has always baffled me.
