yeah this is very connected to my general "suffering is not a political credential and we shouldn't expect it to be" ministry - it's a lot to ask of a hungry person that they couch their feelings about their hunger in a broad critique of the food system (and, in any case, confused imo)

I am so conflicted about this. On the one hand, I can't blame anyone oppressed for prioritizing the end to their oppression any more than I can blame someone starving for eating. On the other hand, if it's short of universalism, it isn't what we need in a political party (let alone an actual party)

The ignorance of folks who are flailing in their efforts to make sense of this moment does not make them the enemy, and verbally slapping them around won't make you feel better for very long. They are poor stand-ins for your actual enemies.

History is full of examples of democratic systems producing legalized cruelty. The idea that “this is just liberal democracy at work” has always been how people justify harms they don’t personally feel.

This, combined with "vice signaling" (taking pride in antisocial behavior) has given us the reign of the Stupid Asshole, something most people are against, but can only be remedied if we're not too polite to talk about it
An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

Reminder that years ago it was found out that the FBI straight up made up a whole bunch of fake forensic sciences, plural. People have gone to jail and been executed due to literally pseudoscience.

Hair forensics, for instance, is totally nonsense.

They admitted it.

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

The ability to ask these questions as if they weren‘t stupid & dishonest has been a key aim of both the new world-wide right-wing movement and of the Kremlin. They want us to think there‘s no truth, only opinion; no morality, only power; that all choices are morally equivalent, & only tribe matters.

Exactly this: the administration’s concentration camps should be a howling, daily outrage, a scandal of historic proportions.
Bari’s complaint was “there’s nothing new here” and while that’s untrue it’s also irrelevant

This is the one cool trick of the grievance right. Harass academics in the name of free speech. Preferences for white people in the name of intellectual diversity. etc
The most impressive thing about Bari is her ability to violate ethical principles while indignantly claiming to defend them.

This is the institutionalization of Turning Point's professor watchlist. It invites mass harassment and declares war on independent ideas. If unlearned sociopaths can influence your teaching through threats, academic freedom is essentially dead.
It’s the entire point. There’s no plan to make this meaningful for students. No plan to use it administratively. Its design and implementation signals its only real intent. It’s best and easiest use case is for systematic harassment and to scare faculty into complying in advance.
We know the students don’t read the syllabuses. So who will? Right-wing activists looking for excuses to hound profs.
