I hate that when AI is wrong people are like "But isn't it amazing that it thinks it's right?" but when I fuck up my taxes it's "a crime." Hypocrisy much?

America “is on a “trajectory toward competitive authoritarianism: a system in which elections, courts, and other democratic institutions persist in form but are systematically manipulated to entrench executive control.”

This is the assessment of hundreds of former US intelligence officers.
An authoritarian movement, led by the president and reaching into Republican-led state governments and the judiciary is chipping away at American democracy.

Trans people are among the first, most often targeted - but it won't end there. Read the full analysis by @billiejsweeney.bsky.social

The right-wing campaign to create an autocratic state is also endangering long-held freedoms for all Americans, pushing U.S. democracy to the precipice. Trans people, its earliest targets, are among t...

Happy solstice! 🌍❄️ Today (Dec 21) at 16:03 (CET or UTC+1) winter officially begins. Shortest day of the year, but your noon shadow will be the longest. From now on, days slowly start getting longer again. Animation by NAAP labs (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) 🧪⚛️🔭#astronomy

In the 90 minutes since I posted this, I've gotten two more death notifications.

ICE has a responsibility to take care of these people, something they are clearly disregarding. This is beyond horrifying. We must ensure dignity and humanity for detained people in this country.
Within 15 minutes today, I got two back-to-back notifications of deaths at ICE facilities.

28 people have died in ICE custody since Trump took office. These facilities are overcrowded & are putting their own profits over health and safety. We need oversight & accountability NOW.

I genuinely affirmatively think that it is now a democratic imperative to spend as much time as you can offline. Read more offline. Socialise more offline. Discuss media you consume with other people offline. Out there is a real world full of people looking for real human connection - seize it
Reading a bunch of books this year has really solidified for me how awful the internet is in comparison nowadays. Obviously in terms of general hostility but more generally in terms of lack of depth, insight, reading comprehension, base of knowledge, etc

i don't think this is even a real statistical anomaly anymore. it seems like there's someone in the crowd at every mass shooting who has been through it before. this doesn't have to be our shared cultural experience.

Everywhere I go I meet creative, intelligent, hard working people with great ideas who can't begin to implement them because they don't have the necessary capital. So much wealth has been hoarded and accumulated it prevents any real economic growth. The problem isn't lack of ideas jesus christ.
This column on Vox is the biggest pile of steaming AI crap I've seen this year. Human's aren't running out of ideas. Instead, those with power and money don't want to listen to ideas that threaten their power and money.

Ideas are plentiful. Putting those ideas into action is the hard part.
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

One theory I have is that competence, self-control, responsibility, and expertise have all been feminized, leaving “masculinity” with the realm of impulsivity and petulance. So the divide is not really between “femininity” and “masculinity” so much as between adulthood and childishness.
Everything else aside, the idea that this is a model for many men of *masculinity* is so wild. This? This is "manly"? This is how people think it's cool to act?

this might be helpful in illustrating the difference between looking at buying subscriptions as “buying content” vs. seeing it as “investing in writers” or even “building new media orgs to last”
Running any media organization is expensive, especially when we pay freelancers industry-standard rates. We were running at a loss until our subscription drive in October, and we're looking at around $33,000 in expenses for 2025.

That is before we pay ourselves.
Yes, it is paywalled! And every time y'all point this out, we will reiterate that writers and artists deserve to be paid for their work. We are an independent publication run and owned by workers. Also A LOT OF OUR CONTENT IS FREE.

Plus, you can read single articles for $2. Including this one.
