Letter to the FT that stingingly sums up Brexit and the shit creek we now find ourselves in.
A terrible idea (naive, prejudiced and uninformed) that has deeply divided us and left us poorer and less secure… but unwilling to face up to the damage we’ve done to ourselves. While the EU moves on.
FINANCIAL TIMES I was amused - and saddened - to read the latest instalment of the Brexiters' excuses for the poor performance over recent years of the UK economy and the UK's politics. In "Implementation of Brexit became a business fiasco" (Markets Insight, December 19), Paul Marshall acknowledges the cost of the UK's decision to leave the EU. But rather than acknowledge that his analysis was wrong - cutting ties with your biggest trading partner is never a good idea - Marshall blames bad implementation, and the fact that the EU didn't cut the UK some slack. Implementation of Brexit by the UK has indeed been poor, but that's a direct consequence of the political crisis that everyone should have expected following such a major decision on the back of one simple 52/48 referendum vote at the conclusion of a mind-bogglingly uninformed debate by both sides. That includes the Brexiters' naive insistence that the EU would bend to UK demands and grant it all sorts of privileges not enjoyed by others. So, the roughly 8 per cent of GDP loss in UK output since the Brexit decision in 2016 is easily explained by three perfectly predictable factors: it was a bad economic decision; it has split UK society politically; and the EU27 has moved on. It's time for those who led the UK down this disastrous path to stand up and acknowledge their wrong analysis and naive understanding of Europe. Until that happens, how can one even hope that the UK will begin to heal? You’re forgetting Sharon Davies. A long history of anti-trans campaigning but not forced to resign. Even ennobled the same week for campaigning over many years. The problem was not that Robin expressed views on (the same) “contentious topic”. It’s that he expressed the wrong one.

But he would rather condemn me than fight for the rights of women and girls I expected more from Ardal. I never thought he would intone the catechism. "I still get on great with everyone," he said in a recent interview with The Times, "though I haven't seen much of the show's creator, Graham Linehan, and am baffled as to why he got involved in the culture wars. I feel sorry for him - he's entitled to his opinions, but the way he presented them made it confrontational. When I read that, I phoned him immediately. When people betray me, I always make the mistake of phoning them straight away. My heart was thumping in my chest as I found his number and gave him a faux-polite, "Hey Ardal, how's it going?". My anger was already boiling. I knew exactly what he would say - the exact same things Bill Bailey said when I phoned him, the exact same things Amelia Bullmore said when I wrote to her. I knew, and I phoned anyway, because I can't help myself. And when he started reading from the same script as all the others, I lost my temper. At some point, Ardal said, "I just disagree with you." I would have said all this to him on the phone, but I was so angry I could not get any of it out. In fact, at one point I said, "You're on my f--ing s--t list." Ridiculous, of course, but unfortunately true. Like Father Ted at the Golden Cleric Awards, I keep a tally of every person who took the easy path and watched me twist in the wind. I can't help it. I remember them all. Tim Heidecker saying I'd gone down a "rabbit hole". David O'Doherty, who didn't have the guts to speak to me. My own brother-in-law publicly calling me insane. Adam Buxton, Jon Ronson, Richard Herring, Stewart Lee. People who knew me, people who had my phone number, people who could have asked, people who assumed the worst because doing otherwise would have exposed them to the same treatment I was receiving. In condemning me, to use Douglas Murray's line, they raise a little flag outside their home so the mob will pass them by. And every time one of them hands a journalist another little quote - another "baffled," another "sorry," another "he's awful, but I hope he's okay" - they get to carry on with their lives while mine gets smaller. This is a decision we would have preferred not to make, and we know that this may be upsetting for members of our community. Yet another colleague deseribed how, at a CCE camp organized by the College, Farage and others had marched through a quiet Sussex village very late at night shout-in Hitler-you songs; and when it was suggested by a master thie boys who expressed such views "don't really mean them", the College Chaplain himself commented that, on the contrary, in his experience views of that kind expressed by boys of that age are onted, and are mennt, At the end of that meeting I had not a scintilla of doubt that after the facts disclosed to you, Farage's nomination would no longer be considered. Nor, I imagine, had my colleagues; other-wise, we would have expressed ourselves even more strongly. But yesterday I was told by a senior boy, in terms of st that Farage was indeed to be selected; and today, of course, his appointment was announced in Assembly an announcement, I gather, which was met with disbelief and derision. To say that is too late to reverse this decision, or that Farage', acdir 3 will be restricted to particular areas of College te, or that he will be supervised within them, is futile. His appointment will have four immediate consequences. First, it will vastly increase his own confidence, and sense of self-justification. Secondly, he will have the privilege of listing his appointment as a profect at Dulwich College in his uni-versity and other applications. Thirdly, his peers, according to their own views, will either adopt him as an exemplar, or, as is much more likely, regard his appointment with disillusionment and cynicism when Ley observe that his notorious views and behaviour, well known to poth Master and members of the staff, are, as it would aptent, condoned by them. Fourthly, those members of the Common Room, such as myself, who believed that a firm daca fon had been reached through a democratic process, will be shock, saddened, angered, and disheartened. You will appreciate that I regard this as a very serious matter. i have often heard you tell our senior boys that they are the nation's future leaders. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these lenders are enlightened and compassionate. As you know, the national and educational press has recently given much prominence to the growing concern at the exploitation of school pupils by extremists of all kinds. A school of the stature and high roputation of Dulwich College which openly con-domned the recent troubles in Brixton, and offered its facilities freely to the foreca of law and order, ought not to be seen laside or outside its confines to be giving its endorsement, expressly or by implication, to budding extremists of the opposite kind. A school which is proud of its selectiveness, conservatism, and discipline, cught not to allow these characteristics to degen erate into intolerance, political extremism, or bullying of the nastiest kind, in its pupils. The matter of the appointment of Farage as a prefect may be thought by some to be minuscule against these deep considerations. It is not so. I am by disposition, tolerant; and in politics, moderate. But as a member of the Common Room, I find it distasteful that a boy such as Farage should have bestowed upon him the prestige of office and authority: wore I a parent or a pupil, I would find it profoundly so. In view, as I am aware, of the wide concern within the College about this matter, I am sending a copy of this letter to the chairman of the Common Room.
