It's Churan Schumdani!

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Let’s break it down:

A scary incident occurred at the Jay St Metrotech Station when a track fire caused the station to fill with smoke.

The @fdny.bsky.social response was delayed due to illegally parked vehicles on Jay St. They couldn't even access the curb due to @nypdnews.bsky.social vehicles parked at a bus stop.

Around 11:30 p.m. last night, Mayor Adams' office announced he's going to Albania this week.

On "day one" of his trip, Adams is meeting with the country's prime minister and will also "visit local businesses and factories."

I was told not to teach a class on the intellectual histories of Zionism and Anti-Zionism next year - not because they doubted I could teach it fairly, but because it would attract too many politicians scrutinizing the syllabus.

A society where that is a valid fear is no longer fully democratic.

For everyone stuck writing about today’s cancellations, here’s the metadata from the “rule” that Vought claims both New York and Chicago are somehow in violation of. The PDF to post it wasn’t even created until 5:47pm, was last modified at 5:55pm. And the government shut down six hours later at 12am

Every bold urban transformation asks a question: what will people remember—the controversy or legacy?

Showing great leadership, Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-bak bet on the latter, replacing a motorway with a waterway.

Two decades later, absolutely no one regrets the decision or remembers the controversy.

Ugh. Mayor Frey trying to get bonus points by recording a video (about gun violence) on bike.

Feels very performative, given his actual track record on active transportation, including CLOSING the Stevens/Greenway bike/ped ramp due to gun violence.

Don’t trust Frey.

For the first time ever, London has met legal limits for nitrogen dioxide.

When I became Mayor, we were told it would take 193 years. We did it 184 years earlier than expected.

Cleaner air means a healthier city and big savings for the NHS.

AOC: I think there's two things that are happening at once: One, there absolutely is an unprecedented abuse of power, destruction of norms, erosion of our government and our democracy in order to prop up an authoritarian style of governance

However, they are weaker than they look…

Relatedly, can you imagine the fire department asking the community whether they felt like following the fire code? Because this is exactly what we do with road safety.
brooklynspoke.bsky.social
Still amazed by this. Can you imagine FDNY saying sprinklers or fire escapes are only needed in buildings where there's already been a fire?

Imagine if we treated any other form of safety like this:"We should only install outlet covers in day care centers on a case-by-case basis, such as where a toddler has stuck his fingers in an electrical socket."

Much of the focus has been on Jeffries and Schumer, but the head of the Queens Democratic Party refusing to endorse the Democratic nominee for NYC mayor is even worse. www.politico.com/news/2025/09...
Mamdani’s upset win also yielded support from crucial New York powerbrokers and union leaders — many of whom previously backed Cuomo’s failed bid. Yet some Democrats remain on the sidelines.
Rep. Greg Meeks, the leader of the Queens Democratic Party, will meet with Mamdani this week — their first one-on-one sit down since the June primary. In an interview, Meeks hesitated to say whether the race had fundamentally changed with Adams’ departure.
“Mr. Mamdani has clearly run a great campaign,” he said. “There’s issues that I agree with him on, and there are some that I do not. Just like other candidates, too. Mr. Mamdani and Mr. Cuomo are better than the Republican alternative.”

I don't get why @zipcar.bsky.social doesn't have a fleet of cars parked near the MetroNorth and Amtrak stations in upstate NY.

I feel that would be a good service. Get on a train, rent a car outside the city, do all the car-dependent shit, get back to the train, avoid traffic the whole time.

But we still don't have all those nice defaults that the dutch have, like cafe locks and racks by default. Those are still seen as extra by a lot of companies in the US.

But even beach cruisers are rare, likely due to the marketing of the name (they also tend to have pretty feminine colors).

And of course the companies are gonna follow that.

It is changing, a lot of new companies are now making upright bikes marketed at urbanites. Specially e-bikes.
pjrt.dev
Pedro @pjrt.dev · 10d
The latter. Either road cycling, path/gravel riding, or full-on mountain biking.

"Hybrid" bikes are supposed to be the "best of both worlds" and allow for city riding. But they suck.

Beach cruisers are meant for slow, recreational, comfortable riding. They can be upright or completely laid back.

Cuz they're sports bikes. In North America, bikes are viewed more as a recreational activity than a means of transportation, and the market has adjusted accordingly.

It's also why a common retort against bike lane projects is to "go bike in the park".

A man was just chased and arrested outside of the Broadview ICE facility in Chicago. When legal observers from the National Lawyers Guild asked why, an agent threatened to arrest them too.
